Not really a story, but I thought this article really summed up the weekend well. Especially with this line: "No one sound defined the artists who made the biggest impact this year ... Instead, the big story was about a mood, a tacit pact made by 25,000 festivalgoers to step off the hamster wheel of competitive daily life and just enjoy: music, self-expression, and the space to breathe." www.npr.org/blogs/therecord/2011/05/31/136818958/sasquatch-2011-bands-in-vacationland

Wye Oak - INCREDIBLE! The girl can sing & shred and the guy plays drums and keyboards AT THE SAME TIME! They sounded so good. Wish they had more of a crowd. The two buddies I dragged (reluctantly) to this were stunned how good they were. www.npr.org/2011/05/29/136581951/sasquatch-2011-wye-oak-live-in-concertYeasayer - rocked the truck out. Great show/vibe/crowd. Would have been a perfect ending to Sunday evening if not for... Ratatat - who blew me away. Jaw agape, dancing my ass off the whole time. Only could have been better with Molly. Deerhunter - so talented. Perfect to the festival. I caught a little of Major Lazer, but a show like Deerhunter put on was exactly how I wanted to feel at the close. Washed Out - did an impressive job with a very new band who are still getting to know each other, but sounded great. The new songs were stellar. Can't wait for the debut now. Hope to see a full show soon. Seemed like there was a decent crowd for an act of his size. Honorable Mention: Bright Eyes - it was great to see them in such a setting, especially since it will be the last. They sounded good, but I've seen much better from them (and very recently). So while it seems weird not to Top 5 my favorite band at my favorite festival, it just didn't define the weekend as much as those above. Gayngs - lot of talented musicians in this band. The sax was sick. However, this was the type of show that requires a female companion (for me anyway).

Technically they do say once your vehicle enters camping it cannot leave and re-enter. However, I have never seen this rule enforced and have left the campsites to stock up on supplies in years past. I'm wondering if they'll be more hard ass about it this year due to the new "no camping without a ticket" policy. Since you have to turn in your ticket for the wristband, I'm guessing those won't be enough to prove you've already set up camp if you try to come back.

Well, that's discouraging. Now that I'm considering the threat of rain as well, it seems more and more like a bad idea.
I think I will try to email them and see how that goes. Thanks for all the feedback!

Rain will only be a problem if it is persistent and the ground doesn't dry out (though watching drunk folks slip on the mud and grass will be amusing).
At any rate - expect some chilly evenings. Bring lots of layers!

Yes! There are services that transfer to digital formats so you can edit/play on a computer. (Its basically just recording a projection, but it works fine).
If successful, I'll definitely share it here!

I have a dumb question. I know its a dumb question and I know that no one will have a definite answer, but I'm going to ask it anyway. The site says no video equipment, but I'm sorely tempted to bring an old Super 8 camera and trying to get it into the grounds. I want to do this NOT because I think it will provide a loophole to the 'no video equipment' rule, but because I think the Sasquatch experience will look INCREDIBLE on super 8 film. As I understand the spirit of the rule is to not have people profiting from the festival. This would be just me with a tiny camera rolling footage for personal use (or maybe film class). I realize my success factor will rely primarily on convincing the checker that its OK. If not, I have to hoof it to the car and back (not much fun with early starts on Sat & Sun, but I can deal with that outcome). BUT, assuming I can get it through the gate. Is every other guard on the grounds going to give me shit for it once its out and rolling? Will they confiscate it? Make me take it back to the car and miss out on the rest of the music that day? This is my biggest worry. I'd really like to know what the worst case scenario is here. How fucked am I if they decide I'm breaking the rules? Thanks in advance for any input on this. PS - I realize most of you don't know what these look like, so here you go. Its handheld - about the size of a hardcover book, but a bit heavier.

Wait, so Corona is Gluten Free? The study was done in Sweden and is in Swedish, but its pretty easy to read. It claims Corona has less than 20 ppm of gluten (which is next to nothing). www.slv.se/upload/dokument/risker/allergi/0510_WEBsorttillverkare.pdfI've heard/read from lots of people who've tried Corona with no complications, including myself. Even the lightest beers give me trouble, but Corona & Pilsner are fine. I've yet to hear of anyone having problems. I suppose if I was binge drinking I might feel it after dozens of them (might find out in a couple weeks! haha). If you know anyone GF have them try it. Seems worth the experiment to be able to drink beer again (even if it is Corona).

I get the feeling that I might be one of the only people watching Mr. Greene on Saturday (at least of those on these boards). That's understandable. He got stuck with a tough time slot.
I'm nervously excited to see him for the first time. His EP is such great summer music and with such a long dreary spring, I just can't wait to be hanging out in the sun at the gorge and grooving to 'New Theory'.
Who's with me on this?

Deerhunter jams a lot in their live shows, lengthening their songs. They're just mind blowing live. It's a shame that they're up against a larger act. If you haven't heard them or seen them live, listen to their set from NPR Music here: www.npr.org/2010/10/12/130386900/deerhunter-in-concert Also: Deerhunter is the main reason why I'm not leaving Monday afternoon. I missed them last time they came to town and I'm very very excited.

Well this is what I am doing for the whole day, but you probably have a completely different opinion: Seattle Rock Orchestra The Globes The Head and the Heart Local Natives 1/2 set Wolf Parade J Mascis Pink Martini (wildcard pick that I think will payoff) A couple songs from The Antlers Iron and Wine Bright Eyes Last couple songs of The Glitch Mob or Robyn 1/2 of DCFC's set BASSNECTAR! Switch - as a fellow Bright Eyes fan, I'm a little saddened you have no plans to see Radio Dept, Wye Oak, or Washed Out. If Pink Martini is a wildcard, I strongly recommend Wye Oak instead - there most recent album is phenomenal. I'd be surprised if you didn't like it based on your other picks.

Does anyone really think I'm going to get any significant number of people to chant WRONG KID DIED during Bright Eyes? I mean, I'M going to yell it for sure but outside of the board nobody is going to get it and I'm not even relying on most of you fuckers to back me up. I mostly enjoy that you'll be watching a band you dislike in order to get the chant going.

Saturday: I hate the fact that The Radio Dept. are on the main stage at 1:00. As much as I hate to say it, it will be near impossible to get my campsite into the venue to catch them. I agree, but it will be worth it. Stay motivated! Sunday: The Flaming Lips vs. Gayngs vs. Gold Panda/Flying Lotus. Horrible conflict, especially when you consider the Lips will roll into the start of Yeasayer as well. This one sucks. Sadly, I might have to skip the Lips altogether or skip Yeasayer and catch a 2nd half of Lips. Grrr I'm even more bummed to have Iron & Wine, The Thermals, & Washed Out at the same time on Saturday. Thermals I can see around town, but with so many other dead spots on Sun/Mon, I really hate that these are bunched. Washed Out better be worth it.

I have room for 1-2 people (plus gear) in my Jeep Cherokee. I'm leaving Friday afternoon and returning either Monday evening or Tuesday morning (I'm flexible).
Looking for a person or pair who are easy going, 420-friendly, and decent conversationalists.
You can email or Facestalk me at my username @gmail. I would prefer to meet up briefly before the trip.

KY mess Jr - If you avoid beer because of a gluten issue, there was a study of gluten content (done in Sweden, I think) and of those that were found to have no gluten, I've found 2 locally - Corona (blech) and Pilzner Urquell. I've tried both and haven't had any issues with them. I plan on stocking up an icebox full of Pilzner for the Squatch. Just an FYI for any fell GF folks who sorely miss beer! While on the topic of beer, I can't drink beer since I'm allergic to it, so I normally drink a cider (like Strongbow) to join in when others are drinking beer. Last time I was in the states I popped into Walmart and didn't see anything cider like in the beer section-- in the states, is this something I'd find only at an actual liquor store? or does Walmrt just not carry it? like I'll still be able to buy it at Safeway, etc. though.

Huh. So I just checked my ticket, which was purchased from Ticketmaster directly and mailed to me and it also says $0.00 and T-4DAY as well. Didn't know that was abnormal.

I think one of the things that will be helped with the new camping policy is it will not get as overcrowded. There are always a surprisingly large number of people who are just camping and taking up all the space. We were in overflow camping before, and while it was fine, it was quite far away from the venue and didn't seem to be quite as fun as when we were right in the mix. As for Friday evening, what time? I just think it would be hard to set up a campsite in the dark. As for spaces, it seems to depend. When we got their last year we were very early and they had several Jive Nation lackeys directing people in like sardines. We had to move our car once and then really fight for a big enough spot. But as time went on they seemed to kind of just give up at some point because I saw a lot of people just finding their own space and having much bigger spaces. I would say just do the best you can and stand your ground. Not in an aggressive sort of way, but take the space you need, you paid for it. You don't really pick who you camp next to, how would you even know upon driving in? Last year we camped next to Canadians, Mormons, a dude from Baltimore, and some bros. And it was great and we all hung out and ate together and played cards and had a wonderful time. One of the reasons I love Sasquatch so much is the vibe. It is very positive and inclusive and people generally respect that everyone is there to have fun and party in their own way. I think as long as you are open minded, chilled out, courteous, and just happy to be there you will be fine. Thanks for this - great reply! I'm trying to avoid taking a vacation day Friday (would rather use that Tuesday for recovery), so probably 8 or 9? But I'm comfortable doing tent set up in the dark. I'm not overly concerned who I camp next to - I mentioned it mainly because I saw it suggested a few times on these boards and that idea didn't mesh with my impression of how the spots would actually be distributed. I'm an easy-going dude, so I don't think it will be a problem, but since I'm flying solo this year (friends are broke, GF will be out of town) I hope to become fest friends with whomever my neighbors are.

I have a related question... I've considered arriving on Saturday afternoon. In terms of what camping space is left then, will I regret it? This post made me nervous about my plan: 2009 - Overflow/parking lot camping sucks. Never showing up late again. My other option would be Friday evening. Would that be much better? I'm also confused about the spaces because some people make it sound like you can pick any spot and others make it sound like the staff will direct you into spaces in the order you arrive. Some here have suggested camping next to Canadians and that seems like a great idea (hockey talk, weed, better beer - win win for me), but I'm more worried about getting sandwiched in between two frat houses. For the record, I've been to Squatch before, but I camped off site (on BLM land - NOT Wild Horse).

Oooooooookay....
Uh, so on the subject of the thread:
Deerhunter The Radio Dept Bright Eyes Washed Out Beach House Iron & Wine Yeasayer Gayngs Ratatat The Thermals
I'm very excited about Deerhunter. They rocked my world at MFNW years ago and I've become a huge fan since, but keep missing their PDX shows. For me, they are a headliner.
Radio Dept - never seen them, but love their stuff Washed out - ditto The Thermals (tempting to skip since they are local, but sure bet for a good show)
I'm definitely more excited for the undercard, but great lineup all around. Will probably spend more time in the dance tent than I have in previous years.
