So the overdose would have meant what exactly if it happened elsewhere? Nothing? It would have meant she would have had a chance of surviving. Vancouver has a place called Insite where addicts can go shoot up heroin with clean needles under the supervision of medically trained staff. They are free to come and go as they please and obviously this is a free service. Even if she didnt go there, regular patrols exist around high risk areas looking for people who have overdosed. The occupy people in Vancouver have been very hostile (from what I understand) towards authority figures and even the media. When the media came to report on the first overdose (where the guy survived) they were confronted by protestors who violently told them that this was their area and the media had no right to be there. They even tried to declare the area an autonomous zone which basically means they take responsibility for all people inside the zone. The city told them several times that their shelters do not meet fire codes and it would be difficult to get help to someone if they need it. After the first overdose they were told to remove unoccupied tents as they made it more difficult to find the person in need of help. Add to this that the fact the city has already re-routed the Santa Clause Parade, Christmas tree lighting ceremony and a Remberance Day ceremony because of this and you can start to see why public patience is wearing pretty thin for this camp. Like I said, I still support the cause, but if they are going to behave like the whole world is against them when clearly the city has gone to great lengths to ensure they can protest in peace then this particular protest has lost my support. It's great that Boise is doing a much better job than Vancouver.

Keep in mind Boise has only been going with an encampment since Saturday so we have yet to reach that point with anything really. We do have right around 40 tents already though which is pretty big given the size of the area.
Boise also, being in Idaho, has a lot more diverse (when compared to the general makeup of the larger metropolitan area occupations) crowd working with it. I believe this is simply due to the general political climate of the area but it is really fascinating to see how different it is.

So the overdose would have meant what exactly if it happened elsewhere? Nothing? I never said it wouldn't mean anything, but it's very unfortunate that the public perception of those who choose to occupy that space only gets worse with this type of story. It's frustrating that the actions of the few will more than likely be the turning point for Vancouver. Nothing accomplished, and lives lost. Good times.

So Washington state is officially privatizing liquor sales. If Sasquatch was one weekend later next year you all could have bought your hard shit at the grocery stores with your beer and food.

I always thought it was weird that you had to get liquor from a special store but pretty much anywhere can sell beer and wine. It isnt like the alcohol in beer gets you any less drunk than the alcohol in vodka.

I might have screwed myself with that analogy. You know what I meant.

A calorie is a calorie and an oz of alcohol is an oz of alcohol.
1 beer (say 5% alcohol) has 17ml of alcohol, and 44ml (~1.5oz) of vodka has the same amount of alcohol. If you drink 1 beer or 44ml of vodka you will get equally as drunk. I know there is more alcohol in vodka than beer, but you will still get drunk off of both if you drink the same amount of alcohol.

My beer drunk and vodka drunk will argue with you about that until the day I die, but I understand what you're saying. I can drink 6 shots of liquor and be completely hammered, but drink 12 beers and just be drunk. I just don't like that comparison.

Probably because it takes a hell of a lot longer to drink 12 beers than 6 shots of liquor.

The Occupiers are planning on shutting down Max (Portland's train portion of public transit) tomorrow morning by protesting on the Steel Bridge. The Steel Bridge is the central point for all trains going east and west from downtown. I guess making people late for work is their goal.
