Seriously great stuff. I'm happy it's being discussed here because I'm learning a lot.

we turn to humor and irony to express our real frustrations because that leaves us an emotional "out" - because it seems so pointless to get really invested in something like this, because continually in our lives earnestness seems ridiculous. Because it's just so hard to feel really informed. All we know for sure is that it's all ridiculous and worth laughing at. But that's the most frustrating thing. I get really upset about this. I love the protests, I wish I could be a part of them, but at the same time I think the people in charge of everything don't give a shit, and frankly they don't need to. Bah. I love this Drew! But that one guy has got a pretty good point about the Crystal Pepsi. Bring that shit back. Fuck yeah! Bring it back! Instead we have Pepsi Max, and Pepsi One, and Coke Zero, and Dr. Pepper Ten, and Cherry Vanilla Diet Caffeine Free 7-Up Plus. I love this Drew! But that one guy has got a pretty good point about the Crystal Pepsi. Bring that shit back. Just say no to Crystal Pepsi. Boo!

HG will agree with you, he loves that shit. I think it is vile. I also think the Van Halen commercials were hilarious.

When we were rich nobody cared enough to answer questions. Now we're poor and the light starts to shine. I think it will take some serious economic shit for real reform to happen.
IMO, the most important step that could be taken, and has a real chance of happening under the right circumstances, is serious campaign finance reform. Like really serious stuff. Obama has hinted that he wants it to happen. I think he could do some interesting things in a second term if given a chance.
Damnit, I still have hope!

I wandered over to the occupy minnesota protest this afternoon and had a lovely time. There were tons of different types of people there and everyone was in high spirits.
I hope these protests continue because it's a much more productive discussion than anything that happens on the internet or cable tv. It was heartening to see obama supporters and ron paul supporters having friendly discussion in person

Good for you for going out cbats! And you really nailed the entire sentiment of it all. We all need to put our differences aside until we get publicly funded free and fair elections. Fuck citizens united....what a misnomer.

My friend went to the Occupy Vancouver protests today (I didnt go partially because like empty I dont know if I can trust gatherings of people in Vancouver and partially because I am being a good consumer and packing for my trip to Mexico tomorrow) and sent my a picture of a great sign.
In big black letters it said "SHIT IS FUCKED UP AND STUFF".
To me this summed up the protests very well. Basically they are saying that the system is broken. That is as far as the general message for these things goes for me. Everything after that is smaller groups of people calling for different things, but the solution to the problem is so complex that no one could sum it up on a sign. Rather than try, he just said that, which made me laugh and at the same time was also pretty clever.

Overheard a kid on the bus the other day. As far as I am concerned, he became the face of Occupy Portland:
Yeah man, I love the public library. They have free internet, and I can go there to take a shit. Anyway, I'm gonna go see what's going on at Occupy, and then I'm going to my parents house so I can take a shower. They're only letting me stay there because I let them make me a dentist's appointment. This tooth? It got knocked out by a tweaker. Tweakers aren't that bad, though. Until they keep you up all night! I'm like, it's hard enough to fall asleep on cardboard as it is..."

Ya well they aren't helping their cause down there. Some fucking retard managed to overdose and die there yesterday so not only is the validity of the movement tarnished, but the city will pretty much be forced to shut it down. Especially with the civic election looming.

So the overdose would have meant what exactly if it happened elsewhere? Nothing?

There have probably already been a dozen overdoses in Portland and a few in Olympia.

Well you cant really blame those who have been failed by society for flocking towards small, independent communities which have such open infrastructures for them to use. This issue has yet to come up with our encampment for the most part. Our camp is a safe and sober zone so I don't even go back there after going to the bars.

Yah dude but you're in Boise.

Boise has a large homeless population per capita, many of whom suffer from the same issues which homeless in other, more metropolitan areas, suffer from (mental illness, addiction, etc).
While the drugs of choice are almost certain to be different in this area, the issue still remains.
