So the OWS:Boise general council meeting was pretty awesome. They've only been meeting for a week and already have subcommittees, including a legal committee which is currently training legal observers who will be marching tomorrow not as participants but as legal witnesses employed by OWS:Boise's lawyer in order to act as witnesses in court in case anyone should be arrested. Now this is my first time observing any sort of protest so I'm not sure if this is standard but it struck me as very smart and professional. 1.) Enjoy the subcommittees. One of my dearest friends from high school has been involved on the Denver knockoff, and all she fucking posts about on Twitter is the stupid bickering that goes on. Holy god it's insufferable. 2.) I hope you misspoke and that the legal observers aren't actually employed. Legal observers should be volunteering their time. I got the training to be one, and have a remarkably sweet hat, but the only time they needed me for an SF protest, I was out of town. Great story.

Yeah you are correct they are volunteers. I'd imagine if they were actually employed, their opinion in court wouldn't be too highly regarded haha. And yeah, the bickering is definitely part of it but the idea is a leaderless movement where allhave an equal say. I do, however, believe it will either evolve out of this or die of attrition. As long as it remains amicable, if at times heated, discourse then I can't see the harm being too great

Yeah, I never really understood the crazy housing market in Vancouver. Even in Calgary it's pretty strange these days. I bought my condo for $180K in 2006 (borrowed about $140K of that), and it's now worth $350K. Even borrowing $140K on my salary back then made me nervous, and the banks were more than willing to lend me another $100K if I felt like I needed it. I decided to borrow what I thought was suitable for me, and luckily at the time (2006 in Calgary) I could actually buy a fairly nice condo right downtown for that price. Nowadays, not so much... And how is it possible for my place to almost double in value in only 5 years, anyways? Housing bubble much? Because, man, Vancouver is like, The Best Place on Earth tm, it even says so on our licence plates! I mean, who cares if you spend all of your money on a shitty condo an hour from downtown, we have mountains and stuff! Even 350K for a condo downtown sounds cheap to me. If/when we have our crash (I dont see many ways of avoiding it) then people will be livid that the governement let this happen. And they will find out that if a whole bunch of people default on their loans, our tax dollars go to pay them off! But no one really cares beforehand, because right now everyone is happy that our housing market is 'healthy' (which I whole heartedly disagree with, if no one but the ultra rich and people willing to lie to get mortgages can afford a home, that is not a healthy market). One thing the protestors dont really consider is that corporations arent the only ones responsible for this mess. Sure, the banks were lending boat loads of money to anyone with a pulse, but that didnt mean they had to take it. Everyone got caught up in the madness, not just the banks. When lots of people bought their homes, they never had any intention of paying it off, they just wanted to keep it for a few years and sell it for 100K more. It is pretty sick the way people were trapped by the shaddy lending, but at least part of the blame still falls on people who borrowed more money than they could pay back.

From a friend's Facebook status:
"In memory of Steve Jobs, an iPhone vigil will be held tonight in Dolores Park at 9pm. Come, turn up your brightness, and remember, together."
I'm trying really hard to not be an asshole about this but are you fucking serious.

The OWS:Boise march was pretty awesome today. We had quite a turnout, somewhere between 2-300 I'd estimate (although one local news station said we were "a few dozen strong" lol). As you can see, there are a few folks in it who are part of the Black Bloc but they aren't there to fuck shit up, they're there for the same reasons as everyone else. It was raining on and off all day but folks just kept showing up. The legal team did a great job working with what is usually a somewhat uncooperative Boise Police Department and they were kind enough to block traffic for us as we crossed major streets and let us do our thing. Fun fact; the guy in the green is Brett Netson from Built To Spill and he is very active in organizing the movement here in Boise.

That is great, fig. It feels good to be part of a larger movement. It will be interesting to see how many people are at Occupy Portland today. Although apparently the news would not be the best place for numbers. That is quite telling and at this point not surprising. I will be at work today but I will join in solidarity when I try and take the bus home through the clusterfuck that is sure to be downtown today.
