Was 2010 bad? I remember 2009 being the scorcher. 2009 was the hot year that according to my phone at the time was upper 80s and low 90s for highs all weekend. 2010 was the year that it dropped into the mid 30s the first couple mornings and I think it was in the 60s every day.

You know he has more songs than Thrift Shop, right? I assume most of Macklemore's haters think that's the only song he's ever written. There's a whole lot more material than that one ridiculously-overplayed song.

That looks pretty great, however I don't trust a forecast more than about three days out. It's a pretty good assumption that it'll be similar to that though, given that weather is easier to predict at the Gorge than on the west side of the Cascades.

Father John Misty is in a spot where I could easily see him instead of Telekinesis if I like his stuff more, gonna have to check it out. Just when I thought my daily schedules had been all figured out...

I just listened to Vampire Weekend's new album that comes out next week, and now I'm more at peace with missing half of Macklemore to see their full set. It's a bit different from their past albums, but still chock full of festival-friendly songs.

I forget what it was, but last year I tried entering the venue with something that was specifically listed as "allowed" on the website, and the security guard straight up told me it wasn't allowed. When I told him the site said otherwise he said it didn't matter and that I could either throw it/them (whatever the fuck it was) away or take it back to my campsite. Long story short, rules don't mean shit when you get to the gate. That's when you ask to speak with their supervisor to make sure they know what they're talking about. It seems to be a pretty common occurrence that the goons checking bags aren't clear on the official rules. Sure the rules may be subject to change at any time, but it's more likely some idiot just didn't get the right info. At least a couple times over the last few years I've gone straight to the little portable office with security supervisors and had them radio to one of the underlings telling them that they were wrong.

Almost all of the potential collaborations in the past five years that everybody thought was going to happen, didn't.

I was pretty serious with my guesstimate. We had friends who got in line at roughly 6-7 on friday night and they didn't make it to the festival grounds until after 10:00. Granted that includes some walking time, but you get the picture. Do not underestimate the possibility of an extraordinary amount of traffic on friday night. Ugggh, this is gonna be me. I just don't want to miss Vampire Weekend. I've already have come to terms with missing everything that comes beforehand (re: Arctic Monkeys, fuck, that one hurts). Flying into Portland at 12:30, friend will swoop me, we'll have to make a blitzkrieg-style grocery store stop on the way - shit's gonna be tight. Isn't Portland about 5 hours from the Gorge in good traffic? Your friend is gonna have to speed to get you guys there on time if there's anything more than about an hour line.

Any lineup that has Fun. as a headliner gets an automatic F grade from me. Like someone else said, you could pick some bands out from the whole list and make a decent one-day lineup but the bands worth seeing are spread out over three days. I absolutely hate the commute to/from downtown Seattle and it would take a lot to get me to even go down there for one day and deal with that gigantic parking mess that happens every year at Bumbershoot. I happen to like Transatlanticism a lot, but I've seen Death Cab live way too many times in the past 5 years to justify dealing with the inner-Seattle headache.

I loved watching the people follow the shade under that weird dance tent in 2009. It casted the weirdest shapes onto the grass and there was always a hoard of people stuffed right inside them. Any fence that was sufficient enough to cast a shadow had hoards of people cowering under the shade as well. That was definitely a sight that was unique to 2009, at least from my perspective. I recall having like 3 hours on one of the days where I didn't have interest in any of the bands and spent a good chunk of that time just trying to find any place to sit down that had shade.

I've only ever arrived the day before the festival starts and never day-of, but I can always see the entrance line from my campsite in premier. My memory of the lines is fuzzy before 2010, meaning there probably wasn't much backup to speak of. 2010-2012 we arrived at the Gorge in the evening and waited anywhere between 1.5 and 3 hours to get in. The worst was last year when we hit the end of the line around 8:30pm and didn't get to our campsite until almost midnight. As far as showing up the first day of the festival goes, during that time period I've always seen a heavy backup on Friday starting as early as 7am and it lasts well into the afternoon. I really hope they've somehow found a magic way to funnel people into the campground for this year, but with Live Nation in charge they'll probably just stick with the same broken system.

I don't know... I saw Ariel Pink open for the Flaming Lips and thought his stuff was okay at the time, but I added one of the albums to my ipod and deleted it a couple weeks later. Maybe I'll give it another listen but I like Alt-J enough that their performance would have to be an XX-like snoozefest to get me to regret my decision to see them.

That's one nice thing to count on, there's usually a steady breeze at Sasquatch. I remember every day in 2009 being in the upper 80s / low 90s but weather history for the location shows low 80s all weekend. So many people got taken away in ambulances for heat exhaustion. There really aren't many places to hide inside the amphitheater if it's a hot day. Any areas of shade will be full of people until the evening.

Burrito does not wear sunscreen, much to my dismay. I didn't either the first year I went in 2008, and returned to Seattle after that weekend with the worst sunburn of my life. I was dark red everywhere on my body that had been exposed to the sun, and I remember peeling for about 3 weeks afterward. Wear some damn sunscreen.

I read somewhere that this summer might be a scorcher, apparently we're overdue for one and Sunday is supposed to be 80, so we might be in for another 2009 situation. If I remember correctly, the 2009 summer was the last time we had an El Nino weather pattern and the spring was warmer than normal. We're in that exact situation this spring. I'm not a meteorologist but if I had to guess I'd say this year's weather will be more like 2009 than any other year I've gone. Almost hitting 80 in Seattle in the first few days of May is abnormal.

Last year I was able to get 4G on my Verizon phone until about noon Friday, and then the rest of the weekend I was stuck on 2G/3G and it took forever to load anything. In previous years I had T-Mobile or AT&T and basically had no internet the entire weekend. Verizon are the only ones that actually roll out trucks to help with the flood of internet users.

I sent their customer support an email asking this question, and this was their response: "Thank you for your inquiry. Yes there will be in and out privileges for the campground however due to the high volume of traffic times are allotted each day by management. Please check with a Live Nation employee before exiting the campgrounds." Not entirely sure what they mean but that, but it looks like you'll be officially allowed to a certain extent Yep, pretty much follows how they handled it last year as well. If there's a massive backup to get into the campground, don't even bother asking them about it. During periods with light traffic they probably won't give you any problems. Assume that there will be a period of heavy traffic from Thursday afternoon until at least early Friday afternoon, and plan accordingly by bringing enough supplies to last until traffic dies down.
