Hey Wolfhat, I was at the Biltmore last night as well...
...and that will likely be the last time I see Freelance Whales. you know, they're okay and I had a good time with my date...but god it was mushy, sappy and just lacked any edge. It sounded like every song they played could have been written about crying over cotton candy, or falling off a teeter todder. The drummer wore a scarf and looked right out of a J Crew catalogue.
Yeah, I am not overly excited by them at all. I do like their sound, though, even if it does lack edge. Their album is no different so I guess I wasn't expecting to have my mind blown.
Their drummer's outfit was hilarious though! Your "J Crew catalog" description is exactly right. For those not at the gig, he is a clean-cut guy and wore a fashionable sweater with a winter scarf tied tightly around his neck. Very strange, but also not out of place in a band of hipsters. Did you see the cardigan the leader singer from Pepper Rabbit was wearing? Well, of course you did. It was navy blue with a nautical theme, oversize, and had large white polka dots all over it. That's how I knew who he was at the bar.
