Wow, HG, I was expecting you to log-on and bash everything everyone said but your Radiohead post was excellent. 16% nicer is right.
I thought we were talking about a single person though, not a band?
Anyway, if we are talking about an artist that changed the musical landscape I am still sticking with Beck.

Ah, Billy Breathes. The first Phish album I ever listened to and it is still my favorite.

I'll admit, I have never really listened to Depeche Mode but I damn excited that they are potentially going to be there just because of their stature. I have listened to The Cure a lot and have them on my list of top 5 bands I must see before I die. I will be more than happy if KOL draws the crowd away from them.

I agree 100%. This discussion will just go round and round and round until HG or Wonk gives us the ultimate and undeniable truth and then we will all just have to live with it.

This just seems like a really silly discussion. "I truly believe that (insert my favorite artist) is the most important musician of our time" I can't help it if my favorite musician of all time happens to be the most important. That's just the way the cookie crumbles. Besides, that's why I used numbers. Numbers are tangible. You could list some obscure artist but it would also be personal preference. If you go strictly by numbers (how many people want to see the live show and how many people spend their money to get the next album) then the numbers do put Dave Matthews up there whether he is my favorite musician or not.

Now's your chance to get in the discussion, Rusty, before HG or Wonk sets everyone straight.

Totally serious. Just because you don't like him doesn't mean you can deny what he has accomplished in the past 21 years.
Edit: Personal preference has a lot to do with this. I know that everyone knows me as the Bright Eyes superfan but a little known fact is that Dave Matthews is actually my favorite musician of all time. No, I'm not afraid to admit that here. I threw out Beck's name just because my personal preference weighs heavy on this discussion.

I just saw The XX in Houston and I have to agree with Geno, it was one of the most boring shows I have ever seen. I imagine a Jamie XX DJ set would be better.

Everyone. I'm just chiming in on the discussion. I know nobody here gives two shits about Dave Matthews so I'll throw out another name to save some of my credibility, Beck. I think Beck has had his hands on a lot of great work and has done a lot to influence musical style.
I think Dave Grohl is great but I wouldn't say most influential musician of our time.
You can't deny that personal preference has a lot to do with this debate.

By the standards listed here I would have to say Dave Matthews is the most important musician of our time. Dude has been touring for 21 years straight with no breaks and is on the list of top selling artists of all time. www.riaa.com/goldandplatinum.php?content_selector=top-selling-artists The DMB is the first band on this list that is current and not country. Not many people can sell out 3 nights at the Gorge and he has been doing it for the past 13 years. He started selling out the Gorge back in 1996. He is not important to anyone on this board but is clearly important to a lot of people.

I can't imagine what the campground must be like for that festival. Oh wait, yeah I can, I live in Texas. Edit: The first week I got my job here I was invited to a barn dance. I had no idea what the hell I was getting myself into. It was basically a college party like any other--beer pong and Busch lite--but there also happened to be some two step dancing going on as well. Yee haw!

No it won't. Phish is playing the Gorge, dude. Speaking from experience, Phish at the Gorge wins out over a lot of things. And Souly, you should definitely go.

Smaller draws for people who don't have their priorities straight. Beck was the biggest draw for me last year. Tenacious D was 2nd.
