Her voice was really bad the first song, and I was mostly bored for the first 20 minutes. It still ended up being one of the best shows I've seen this year. The bass was so loud at the end of Machine Gun, that it felt like a 25 mph wind gust blowing in my face for 30 seconds. I could only compare that feeling of bliss to skydiving, total relaxation. Dubstep, what?
Also, the WAMU Theater is a fantastic venue. Paul Allen doesn't fuck around.

I find it hilarious how decent WaMu theater is, considering it isn't even a theater or venue at all. It's just an exhibition hall that they transform into a music venue for shows. Would you believe that this is the same place, Know?

wow I wonder if they made some serious sound improvements there since the last time I went. Then again, maybe I just hate all 4,000 person venues is giant warehouses

At portishead as we speak, watching the opening act Thought Forms. If they play this same song for the next 45 minutes I think I might have to kill a monk.

Would you believe that this is the same place, Know? I believe it wasn't designed as a theater, because it isn't a theater, but theaters can be really cramped. I loved how spacious it was, easy to get the facilities, easy to get to the concessions/drinks. I'm probably just jealous because Portland doesn't have an indoor venue that houses 4K+, except for the arenas which have really bad sound. WAMU had great sound, so it was more like a giant music venue than a small arena. Paul Allen funded the EMP, and has more money than Oprah, and it sounded like he invested some change into making the sound at WAMU as top notch as possible. Even the staff were cool (to me). On the flip side, the bar district near the stadiums can suck my left ear lobe. I experienced the worst service, and had the worst food, at three different locations. I tip really well, and never go below 15%, even for terrible service, but I'm kicking myself for not walking out of two of those places with a zero tip. I don't think I like Seattle anymore.

What bars did you check out? I wish I was able to make it up there to join you. I probably would have just ended up going to the show as well. Give me a few days notice next time and I'll definitely meet up with you for a drink, and I'll be sure to show you some quality establishments.

What bars did you check out? I wish I was able to make it up there to join you. I probably would have just ended up going to the show as well. Give me a few days notice next time and I'll definitely meet up with you for a drink, and I'll be sure to show you some quality establishments. Since every thread is every thread, I have no problem calling out the shitty joints I attended. I got to the bar district around noon, and spent an hour wandering the area looking for a sports bar showing the Steelers game, which started after the Seahawks game. Of the six sports bars I found on my phone within miles of that area, two were closed, and two had every TV tied to one game feed. Neither would be showing the Steelers game, because they were showing the nationally televised Packers/Vickings game instead (no satellite). So I ended up at the J & M Cafe. My first question to the server, "do you have a satellite?" The answer was yes. "Will you be showing the Steelers game at 1:15?" The answer was, "oh yes, definitely." So I directed the couple I went to the Portishead show with to meet me there, and we all ordered food. When the Seahawks game ended, I asked the server for the third time to put the Steelers game on, and he said they don't have it. He lied to me, and all their tvs were tied to the nationally televised game. My food had just arrived, and it was shitty, so after two bites, I left to find a bar with the Steelers game on. I nearly caused a big a scene when telling the guy, "close out my card, the only reason I'm here is for the Steelers game, and you said it would be on." I felt like throwing my shitty food at him. I ended up at Merchants, really close to there. It was a small place, but they had all four afternoon games, so I was cool. The new owner spent the first 20 minutes I was there welcoming all newcomers, and mingling with everyone who was already there. The capacity was barely 40, and it was empty, so it was odd I was being ignored while he spent five minutes talking to and serving everyone else. My friends eventually met me there, and we were met with great service immediately. They were groomed and dressed much nicer than myself, so we got service. My friend's girl ordered fries, because they sounded good based on the menu description, and they ended up being a less tasty version of McDonalds fries. Total ghetto. The last spot we went to was a bar with a great beer selection, and really expensive food. It was on second, about four blocks from the venue parking lot (the entrance near the bus station). They only had one guy working, and the place was packed, so the service sucked (not his fault). But, my $16 plate of food tasted like shit, and wasn't actually what was described on the menu. The sausage was burnt, and it was mixed with only onions and peppers, instead of the tasty potatoes the menu stated. I was specifically looking for carbs, which is why I wanted those potatoes. Overall, three of the worst experiences I've had eating/drinking out in the last year, combined into one day. /story. I hate Seattle.

Hah. I've only ended up at J&M once, and didn't even recognize it by name when you mentioned it since I stumbled in there extremely drunk after a Sounders match last year. From what I remember it was a total shit hole and even in my drunken state wasn't impressed. I've never heard of Merchants so I can't speak to that unfortunately. The 3rd bar sounds like Elysian Fields, but I've always had amazing food their so I'm hoping that isn't where you ended up. Was it right across the street from the football stadium?
I'm sorry to hear about your experience. You were right near a few amazing spots for food and beer, just off by a couple streets from what it sounds.

Dubstep, what? This, big time. I wanted to take a picture because most of the people around me were plugging their ears, and the girl and her annoying boyfriend in front of me had to leave it was so loud. But I didn't want to interrupt the BLISS. tl;dr - I liked the part that went WOMP WOMP WOMP

I'm not sure why it took me 20 minutes of googling 1996 Seattle google maps before I realized I could just check my credit card to find the name of the third bar. It was The Collins Pub. Don't order the sausage with non-existing potatoes. And I'm pretty sure your local Sounders hang out was one of the bars that was closed. It had sports written all over it, it was right across the street from the parking lot, yet it was not open.

Unfortunately the immediate stadium bar district operates almost strictly around sporting events, so many of them are horribly understaffed or simply closed on off days. I've never heard of the Collins Pub either so I can't say anything about that one, but from the sounds of it you just had some shit luck with your findings. After my horrible experience in downtown PDX before Bon Iver, I'm willing to give your fine city another shot, so I hope you'll let dear old Pea show you a grand time in Seattle next time (hoping there's a next time) you visit.

Portishead was rad, but I dont really have a lot to add. Those that described the Seattle show, described the Vancouver show to a t.

I don't think I'll ever be able to get into Portishead the way all of you guys seem to be. The recent live videos just look kind of boring, which makes me glad I didn't fork over the $70 for a show I wasn't even certain I would fully enjoy.

the only live image of Portishead I have is from watching their Live at Roseland, NY performance on MTV all those years ago - and that was fucking incredible.

Well of course you'd have to be a Portishead fan to appreciate their shows. There was this guy next to me with his girlfriend/wife/lady friend and he didn't look very happy to be there while his lady friend was having the time of her life.
