while i was waiting for the ADT guy to come around, I went ahead and compiled a list of as many 90s acts (all genres) I could think of that would be worthy of being included in an all 90s battle royale... my list has over 150 bands/singers in it.
so yeah, i'll file that idea away until it gets REALLY slow around here.

This is the slowest it will be until next July, and it sounds like you've already done a lot of the leg work. We also have a whole month until Egg Nog.

That decade is bookended by two incredible albums (1990 - Flood) and (1999 - California) that are never even brought up by most people.

The 1990s BATTLE ROYALE PRE-TOURNAMENT
So I managed to reduce the original batch of 153 bands down to a far more manageable 64.
And before a few of you shoot me for not including your favorite acts from the 1990s, the basic criteria for who I chose to include in this competition goes down to a very simple question 'Who were the biggest acts in the world at the below mentioned genres between the years 1990 - 1999?' (i.e. - Sadly, Toadies weren't any more popular than the 16 I chose to include in the 90s Alt Group, so they didn't make the final cut. Simple, right? OK, moving on...)
Still, I recognize that there are many a worthy band that I may have accidentally overlooked. And some I probably don't care for or never heard of, so the chances for oversight are likely. Thus, if you can provide a good reason as to why I should include any particular band I left off, I'll consider adding them before we actually begin this tournament. I'll consider adding up to 16 bands.
BUT ONLY 16 MORE. MAKE SURE THEY'RE WORTHY OF BEING INCLUDED.
Additionally, bands like Creed, Hootie & the Blowfish, Matchbox 20, etc didn't make the cut for obvious reasons. So... don't ask dumb questions like 'why no love for Sister Hazel?!' Capisce?
PRE TOURNAMENT FINAL 64
Group A - 90s Alt/Grunge Pt 1 Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, R.E.M., Red Hot Chili Peppers, Cake, They Might Be Giants
Group B - Singer/ Songwriter/Classic Rock Beck, Prince, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Morrissey, Madonna, PJ Harvey, 10,000 Maniacs, Aerosmith, Jeff Buckley
Group C - Overseas Rock U2, Pulp, Cure, Depeche Mode, Primal Scream, Oasis, the Cranberries, Belle & Sebastian, Blur
Group D - Hip/Hop Dr. Dre, 2Pac, Notorious B.I.G, Snoop Dogg, A Tribe Called Quest, the Fugees, Public Enemy, Beastie Boys
-----
Group E - Hard Rock/Metal/Industrial Nine inch Nails, Tool, Pantera, Danzig, Metallica, Primus, White Zombie, Rage Against the Machine
Group F - Electronic/ Trip Hop the Chemical Bros, Moby, the Prodigy, Daft Punk, Massive Attack, Portishead, Bjork, Jamiroquai
Group G - Punk/Ska The Offspring, Fugazi, NoFX, Social Distortion, Bad Religion, Rancid, Green Day, Mighty Mighty Bosstones
Group H - 90s Alt/Grunge Pt 2 Phish, Counting Crows, Weezer, Smashing Pumpkins, Dave Matthews Band, Blues Traveler, Stone Temple Pilots, Our Lady Peace
*You've got until Sunday morning to give me a list of bands worthy of being added. Tournament begins on November 6th.*

Thanks! Looks fantastic Stamper. Any chance of Blur making the cut in the Overseas Rock category? Or Jeff Buckley in the Singer/Songwriter? Or Faith No More in Group H?
There is obviously a lot of love for Blur and Jeff Buckley released on the greatest albums of the 90's.

Good catches! of course. i actually thought I had Blur on there already. Jeff Buckley is absolutely worthy of being included, too.
I'll put them both on there now.

I think Ben Folds Five, The Black Crowes and Nas should all probably be on there.
I would put Third Eye Blind and the Gin Blossoms on there...but thats because I love them.

That's a pretty solid list. Its pretty clear what I listened to when I was a kid, every single band in the punk catagory brings back a wave of awesome memories.
I agree thet Nas should be on there. And no Foo Fighters?

I think Ben Folds Five, The Black Crowes and Nas should all probably be on there. i had all three of them in my batch of 150... they just didn't make it passed the initial cut. i'll consider tossing them back into the mix. as catchy as their songs are, and as much as i enjoy some of those songs, neither band have much of a chance at advancing.
