Yay fig! You are Occupying the News. Glad to see it is not a mess like it is here. On the way home last night I saw like 20 cops in riot gear hanging around. Yikes! Also I actually needed to go to the bank so I could get a counter check to pay rent but the bank had been closed due to the stuff going on downtown.

It totally bums me out. CDs are supposed to be phased out by the end of 2012 and I don't believe in paying for music without owning a physical copy, so I might be fucked.

CD's are being phased out? I had no idea that was happening. It might not be up your alley, but every vinyl I have ever bought has come with a free mp3 code inside; so you could have your physical copy and still get it on a CD or Ipod.

SOPA threatens just about every aspect of the internet as we know it. Its comparable to the Patriot Act in the sense that as soon as a "complaint" is raised against a website, they can be shut down without any due process.
News aggregate sites such as my beloved Fark and reddit could be taken down pretty easily by SOPA. It needs to be stopped but it is not looking too good so far...in the first day of hearings, the scheduled hearings FOR SOPA outnumbered hearings against it something like 6-1.

Yeah that guilty until proven innocent trend seems to be taking over. Totally fucked up.
EDIT: does anyone know if this will only block americans from viewing the sites, or will it just shut them down completely?

Its my understanding that it will block the sites to all IPs which come from inside the US. DAMN YOU LUCKY CANADIANS.

Vinyl just isn't practical for me in my everyday life because of my job. The CD has been a great friend of mine for a long long time.

Is this phasing out of CD's specific to record stores or will you still be able to buy CD's through the record labels? As it is I am already buying the bulk of my CD's and vinyl straight from the label.

Have to say, the hammer is too big for the nail but I support this.
It's weird, it is simultaneously a step in the right direction and the wrong. Current methods do precisely fuck-all to prevent piracy, though, so it is not surprising.

I've come to expect the worst in bills which are so ambiguous that some fear they can be used to curtail free speech because they almost always are eventually used in such a manner.

Thanks for posting that link Pea. That really sucks. One of my favourite things in life is the opening of a CD. Peeling back the plastic, opening the case, reading the liner notes, looking at what the CD looks like, getting that new CD smell and so on.
I guess that means if the CD goes away then so does album art.

I'll never forget the first CD I ever bought
