I sorta hope Lou goes. I love the guy, but there is no way we can keep him and Schneider next season. Lou is still great, but he is probably heading for a steady decline in the amount of games he can play per season, so we will start relying on our backup more and more. If we don't have a somewhat decent backup, it hurts our chances overall. Schneider is still in his prime and can play as many games as he wants. I also think he has the potential to be as good or better than Lou is now and in the future.
Idealy we would keep things the way they are, but with Schneider up to be an RFA next season there's no way he will go for less than $4 million, which we can't afford with our current cap situation.

Lu will go... the question is what will we get for him? Unfortunately the answer is more than likely nothing that good. We'll have to take a cap hit to give one away.

So you're saying we will get some overprices player in return for Lou? We can't afford that. Vancouver is at the tippy top of the cap right now, and I highly doubt the cap is going up at all next season (which screws my fantasy hockey team as my star D-man Erik Karlsson will likely go from $1.3mill to somewhere around $6 mill).
We don't really need anything in return for Lou. A decent backup would be nice, maybe a cheap, young defenceman or two, but really that's it. We just need to get his big cap hit out of here to make room for Schneider's fancy new contract.

I'm saying that there aren't a lot of teams out there that can take on his salary without dumping some of their own. So either we're going to get an over-priced return, or we're going to get draft picks and trade bait.
Either way we're not winning anything with this trade and that is unfortunate.

I think this guy makes some valid points. What a heart breaker that Canucks loss was. I think we should trade Lou to Columbus for Rick Nash as well as Daniel, Burrows, and a 2nd pick to Pittsburgh for Crosby (word is he is being shopped!). I hope they re-sign Paulsson and can also land Ryan Suter in the offseason. We will be unstopable with that lineup!!!!!!!!!!!

I think the only reason to get rid of Lou other than to appease the blood-thirsty fans is to get cap room. If we get someone just as expensive as Lou in return then it's pointless. Over half the teams in the league have more than $3mill in cap space, so if Lou replaces their $2mill goalie then they can afford him.
All of the Canucks costly guys are under contract through next year so unless we get rid of someone like Kes or Ballard we need to save money by moving Lou; otherwise there's no point.

I can't see Luongo ending up anywhere other than Tampa. They have no other goaltending prospects in their system so Luongo would be the clear number 1. The Canucks don't need to get anything in return for him they just need to move him to sign Schneider. They have a real need for a big power forward type player and Ryan Malone would be a good trade option IMO. Malone makes 4.5 mil a year and 'underperformed' this season. At best I don't think Gillis could get more than a late first round pick or something of that value because of Lu's contract.
Burkie shouldn't give up on his goalies just yet. They have Reimer, Gustavsson and Scrivens (AHL goalie of the year). It wouldn't be smart to put Luongo into another potential Schneider situation.
Once Luongo is gone we can all turn our attention to who should go next.
My wish is Raymond. Useless player for the western conference. Too small and passive, too easy to knock around.

Dude, the Canucks have 0 room for cap space. Schneider will go from $900K this year to (I'm guessing) $4mill. That means we need to make up $3mill by getting rid of Lou or someone else. Lou is 5.3mill so we can't get anyone much over $3mill.
Raymond is a RFA next year so we could let him go if a team makes an offer on him and we get a couple free draft picks out of the deal. Not too bad as he was pretty lame this season. But that still only frees up $2.5mill of room.
Oh, and don't reply to wylde... he's just Friendly D fucking with you.

I think you're right about Schneids making around 4 mil next year. I didn't even think about getting draft picks if another team makes an offer on Raymond. I hope he can go to an eastern conference team more suited to his skill level. If only they could find a way to dump Ballard onto another team as well. Maybe they package him with Lu and get something decent. And thanks for the tip. I should have known better than to respond to someone talking about trading Crosby...

Yeah free draft picks for giving up an RFA is a pretty sweet deal, but it also makes it less likely for a team to make an offer on him since they would lose probably their first round pick (not exactly sure what the cutoff is this year). If we could trade Ballard for a bag of pucks we should jump all over that deal, he's taking up way too much cap space for what does for the team.
