So uh, theoretically, if a man were to go about getting into Sleater Kinney, what might be a good place to start? Prince - Purple Rain

The Woods and Call The Doctor are excellent too. You really can't go wrong. I say start with No Cities to Love and just work your way backward through their catalog.

Dig Me Out. It was their breakthrough album and one of their best. I think that would be a good place to start.

I started with Dig Me Out too, followed by All Hands on the Bad One. You really can't go wrong with their catalog.

I've got total respect for the guy and his place in rock and roll history, and I definitely won't be missing his set. But honestly, after a month of getting to know some of the rest of the lineup, if I rewrote my top ten list today, he probably wouldn't be on it.

Robert plant is great but I feel like I might miss him if he's playing at the same time as st Vincent

Sub Pop has a Sleater Kinney beginners guide playlist on spotify as well which is great, here's the link:

Awesome, thanks for all the suggestions/links, guys. Stoke levels rising.
Also, cheers chud: I'm really digging this stuff they released under the Prince moniker. Definitely a lot different than the later releases, but it really showcases their range.

As someone who's just now digging into Modest Mouse (confession: before the lineup announcement, their only sing I could name was Float On), I found this article very interesting and possibly helpful. consequenceofsound.net/2015/03/modest-mouse-in-10-songs/I can see them following a similar path as The National did for me: a band who did little to nothing for me at first who's albums grew on me slowly until they kicked the fucking door down live.

I'm excited for the Modest Mouse set. I'm in love with the early stuff, but all of their albums have been at least enjoyable in my opinion. They were great in Calgary and at Pemberton last year!
I haven't given the new album a listen yet though, how is it guys?

Damn you're just now getting around to Lonesome Crowded West and The Moon & Antarctica? Two of my favorite albums of all time.

Hopefully there's some tracks on there that will sound good live. I'm hoping they play lots of jams from LCW and M&A

I just listened to The Moon and Antarctica for the first time today and I'm looking forward to listening to it again. So far I've only really listened to Good News... and We Were Dead... Both definitely had their moments and got me interested enough to check out their earlier stuff. They certainly strike me add the kind of band that will be a totally different experience live vs on record.

The last time they played, they did a fair amount of more obscure tracks (Here it Comes, Baby Blue Sedan, Shit Luck) so I'm hoping for similar pleasant surprises. Even at Pemberton last summer they busted out "Talkin Shit About a Pretty Sunset," so you can reasonably expect some Lonesome, Moon, and Long Drive jams.
I've only listened to the singles from the new record. Most of it is familiar and sounds very close to We Were Dead in terms of production and tone. Nothing exactly a showstopper, but I'll hold off opinions until I listen to the full record. Honestly though, they're a completely different band than they were before. And I got into them through We Were Dead so I have no problem with them working comfortably within that zone, even if it isn't exactly new, or as memorable as their first couple albums.
They brought the thunder for their last Squatch set for their home region crowd, and i expect it to be even better this time around.

Long Drive... is their best album, fuck the haters. I wrote a drunk review of it in the old thread where each person talked about a favorite album of theirs every week a few years back. Check it out

And Modest Mouse starting their set with Shit Luck in 2011 exploded my brain.
