I finally got around to watching Fun.'s performance on Conan. That is pretty terrible.

Just put on this Fun. album; Jesus Christ this is awful. On the first track, they rip off Queen, ELO and Nilsson, and each is more cringe-worthy than the last.
Oh good. ABBA, now. That's just what this fucking needed. Holy shit.

This is literally everything I hate about contemporary indie music. All in one place.

This is actually pretty amazing; it's so titanically awful that I can't turn it off. I have to see how many legitimate artists they can bastardize; I have to hear more asinine lyrics about 'Look[ing] into [his] nephew's eyes'. It's like getting vaccinated for a trip to Mexico, I have to put small amounts of all these deadly organisms into my system so that if I encounter them in their natural habitat they won't make me shit myself inside out.

So I'm on the second song of the debut album from this "fun" band that is playing Sasquatch. It's everything HG hates about music, and has already ripped off Queen on an unforgivable level, but hot damn this is some catchy stuff. They're definitely the next big thing in the world of bubblegum indie music. EDIT: Oh god. Some of these songs are worse than anything Owl City has ever put out. Hear for yourself... I can't remember the last time I heard a song this awful. It seriously sounds like Owl City and Simple Plan in a blender.

So all i've listened to is 'it gets better' and the Conan performance, but based on that and based on what you're saying...i think it's fair to state that...paris hilton ain't got shit on fun..

fun. is music inspired by Youtube. While we hear the Queen/ELO/ABBA influences I think attributing the inspirational sources to those artists is a little too generous. It feels more like they heard this music on Glee or saw a Youtube person play a cover song of a cover song with a whole bunch of loop pedals and synth drums. This is a band that has only ever heard the "Hey Jude (remix)", if ya get what I'm saying.

Fun is as close as it gets to biff. Make it a mix of biff and Foster the Nutsack.

They're a local Portland band, and even Portlanders are over them. Last time I saw Helio Sequence was as the 'Celebrity Judge Panel' at the Red Bull Flugtag, like four years ago. This is so true that Portlanders are over them. They have played MFNW a couple of times recently but they release albums every four years so people sort of forget about them.

The odd thing is that Nate Reuss (lead singer of fun.) was previously in a band, The Format, that was generally highly regarded, especially their album Dog Problems. They were still highly derivative (so HFG probably still hates them), but I found Dog Problems at the Multnomah County Library's used store for 75 cents and it's pretty good. Here's some irony from wikipedia: "The Format chose their name to make fun of the music industry's inclination towards a cookie-cutter "format" for a hit." And look at fun. now.

I'm really loving Shearwater. Never been really a fan of Okkervil River though.

I feel bad but everytime Shearwater starts playing on my 'Sasquatch 2012' playlist I think it's jack black pretending to be all slow before the grand reveal. It's probably a coincidence with jack black's voice and me not trusting anybody who's trying a little too much to be epic, but it's pretty funny. It's happened too many times with the actual d for me to trust myself, but it's also pretty awesome when I figure out that it's just actually rock music. Fucking comedy rock...you're just my favorite!
