Whoa I don't know about that Guero has always been my least favorite beck album (mellow gold - modern guilt) Can you clarify this post for me? You don't know about Guero aging well? And are you saying that Mellow Gold and Modern Guilt are your favorite Beck albums, or are you saying that Guero is your least favorite Beck album, excluding Stereopathetic Soul Manure and One Foot in the Grave? Also, what are you agreeing with, wife?

Either way, Guero is waaaaay better than either The Information or Modern Guilt.

I was agreeing with Guero aging well, BTW.

So is Stereopathetic Soul Manure, for that matter.
EDIT: In fact on some days that is my favorite Beck album of all.

i was excluding stereopathetic and one foot in the grave cause i've barely listened to them. I love the information but modern guilt would probably be my second least favorite behind guero. Guero isn't all around horrible but I just found most of the songs to be beck trying to relive past glory and it came off as fairly cheesy.

Wow dude as usual I object on a fundamental level to every aspect of your post but somehow manage to maintain respect for you. Weird how that works.

ha fair enough. I'll throw on Guero tonight cause it's been a while since I listened to it but you should consider giving the information another listen. It's not nearly up to par with Odelay/Midnight Vulture but it settles into a nice groove that I thought fit the older version of Beck pretty well.

All I get from The Information is self-loathing. Thematically it is overbearing as shit when it comes to him embracing his Scientologist upbringing, and you can just see him disavowing all of the aspects of his career that had made him great because he was embarrassed by them. He'll hardly play a note off of Midnite Vultures in concert anymore because he is ashamed of himself.
That means no more king sized four-post bed with satin sheets draped across it being lowered from the rafters while he writhes his way through 'Debra'. Nuh uh, not cool Beck Hansen. The Information had all of the signposts pointing to the departure of Beck's muse written all over it.
...anyway, I'll put it on again to see if I can change my mind about it.

This was the first time I ever saw anything live from Beck, and I was Blown, with a capital B, the fuck away.

no i completely agree with that but that shit was all gone by the time guero came out. I saw him twice on that tour and it was just depressing (once was at sasquatch, he played for like 60 minutes). We lost the Beck of the 90's by the time Sea Change came out but I think that record and The Information were at least him attempting to be honest with himself. Guero just made me sad because he was pretending to be someone he clearly wasn't anymore.

How do you know he was pretending to be someone he wasn't? I feel like that is pretty presumptuous if you don't know the guy. Is he not allowed to be a complex person and assert different aspects of that in his work?

I've always intended to, but never actually have listened to a Beck record. I should probably get on that.

I've always intended to, but never actually have listened to a Beck record. I should probably get on that. yeah you should really get on that How do you know he was pretending to be someone he wasn't? I feel like that is pretty presumptuous if you don't know the guy. Is he not allowed to be a complex person and assert different aspects of that in his work? Maybe it's presumptuous but he looked incredibly bored while performing on that tour. He used to be the most fun thing on stage but he increasingly relied on back up dancers and hype men while he performed. Maybe he loved what he was doing but he didn't show it very well. More importantly, I think he is a complex person and does assert different aspects of his personality. Odelay, Mutations, Midnight Vultures, and Sea Change are all incredibly different records and I love each of them. What disappointed me about Guero was that it was the first time it seemed like he was doing something for commercial and not artistic reasons. It's possible I was completely off base here but that was my impression at the time. My view is also probably colored by the fact that beck was one of the first artists I got really obsessed with. I saw him when I was like 14 and was completely hooked. By the time Guero came out 2 or 3 years later it was the first time that I felt completely let down by one of my favorite artists.

i've never once felt let down by Beck. while Modern Guilt is probably his least compelling work, it's still better than most other artist's best albums.
as for Guero... that album fucking rocks.

Flaming Lips and all that? And THAT was what got you hooked? Ugh, that shit was a disaster.

Rusty are you for realsies? Where were you in the nineties?
I liked Guero a lot when it came out, personally. When we were listening to it last night I was seriously getting down with it. Cbats, I get it is not your favorite, but what about it makes you feel it was more commercial than artistic?
