Honestly, I just think there's so much pressure on those Pitchfork reviewers that they can't hear anything for what it is, but rather they hear the public expectation and ramification of their reviews. So for Bon Iver, for instance, his sophomore album is expected to be great or a huge miss, and it's like the reviewer can't just say, he's a good songwriter but his first album's better. That doesn't generate enough press.
I realize I'm sort of making two arguments there, but whatever. Kiss Each Other Clean is the shit.

I don't have much to add other than I think the new Bon Iver is better than For Emma.

The new Bon Iver is meandering and boring. And the problem with Pitchfork reviews is the same as the problem with any review -- they are basically just articulating their initial reaction to the piece, when of course most anyone is going to need a good couple weeks and several listens to really decide how they feel. The additional problem with Poochfuck writers is that since they consider themselves to be the gold standard of taste, they will stand by their first douchey knee-jerk reaction until end of days (or until the album is re-released ten years later).

I'm sure Pitchfork reviewers have plenty of time to listen to the album. I'm sure they get it a month before it is released, just like everyone else on the internet, so I'm not buying the initial reaction theory.
I'll agree with Drew's post about generating publicity though. Like it or not, Bon Iver is now a pop star (thanks to Kanye West). Check out the charts in the back of Rolling Stones. He is in the top 20, along with Lady Gaga, Amy Winehouse, Beyonce, Adele, Katy Perry, and a bunch of people I've never heard of. Pitchfork gave Bon Iver the highest (guessing there) new release score this year. It's a way of tapping into the pop crowd, and saying, "look, we like what you like as much as you like it, you might like what else we like too." They are tapping into that crowd who listens to pop, who might be looking for something else with a little less bubble gum. If they give Bon Iver a proper score of around 5.8, it gets buried amongst all the other albums that no pop fan has ever heard of. Then Pitchfork.com gets less hits, and less ad revenue.
It's the same reason they gave Kanye West a perfect 10 last year. It's a concept that rhymes with "swell shout."
PS. cbats is getting close to getting a custom title with the word "Pitchfork" in it.

PS. cbats is getting close to getting a custom title with the word "Pitchfork" in it. Go for it, I have no shame. I just think that saying kiss each other clean is better than Bon Iver is kind of a silly opinion. edit: also know I don't agree with really anything you said in your post. Specifically, if we're talking top 20 charts this year has been rife with strong openings such as Fleet Foxes, The Decemberists, and even Iron and Wine. Why was Bon Iver different review-wise from these other indie artists?

Yes! Really enjoying both of these. Perfect windows rolled down, summertime albums.

And I don't think it's fair to say that opinion is silly. It's not like we're comparing Katy Perry and Radiohead here. Kiss Each Other Clean was a way more ambitious album by a clearly more veteran songwriter, IMO.

Putting on some old Residents vinyl. 'Randy Rose', a.k.a. 'Mr. Skull', a.k.a. 'The Singing Resident', a.k.a. ' ', was admitted to the hospital today to be treated for exhaustion. A speedy recovery, god willing, because I am not ready for this yet.

Since we're talking about Pitchfork, is there any musical opinions by Pitchfork that you vehemently disagree with?

Go for it, I have no shame. I'm just playing with you. We try not to assign unwanted custom titles anyway. Since we're talking about Pitchfork, is there any musical opinions by Pitchfork that you vehemently disagree with? Pitchfork has some stupid ratings but I have trouble getting up in arms about their opinions. I thought they really underrated the last frightened rabbit cd (winter of mixed drinks) and I kind of love tool and some Mars Volta (although I thought their lateralus review was pretty funny). Most of their electronic opinions I disagree with and don't even bother listening to (who the fuck is araabmusik, I have no idea). Best Coast is fairly lame, smith westerns are hit or miss at best, girls do nothing for me, I can't stand no age, I thought the newest deerhunter was pretty lame compared to microcastle, and even as the board's biggest Kanye fan I laughed out loud when I saw it was a 10.0 (i just ran through like six months of best new music selections to see which I disagree with for this) For the most part they don't review a lot of the stuff that we disagree on (stuff like brand new I guess) and I usually agree with their really low scores (mumford and sons, edward sharpe, Ghostland Observatory, and the head and the heart specifically). If something I like gets between a 6 and a 7 (this year I'm thinking of Joy Formidable and Braids) it's hard to get too riled up because the review will usually highlight a lot of strengths and talk about how the album can be improved. Since I mostly pirate music (shocking I'm sure), I usually form an opinion on albums before they've been reviewed by pitchfork. Oftentimes I'll learn about a band or a new release from their news section but realistically I only use their reviews as a reason to revisit an album I may have dismissed quickly. so for all the haters, what albums have they reviewed that really upset you?

I don't have much to add other than I think the new Bon Iver is better than For Emma. I totally agree with this. Aside from Skinny Love, For Emma was really blah to me. I love the new album, it is fantastic.
