... and while on the subject of custom titles, we can probably drop Board Archivist from mine - as i haven't archived shit in months.
but kicking children? - that's a different story altogether.

My problem with Pitchfork isn't because I disagree with the ratings they give albums, or even the douchey things they say about them in reviews. My objection is what they choose to review.
The best example of this (and I've bitched about this before) was right before the last Philistines Jr album came out -- they ran a news story about the companion album of covers that was supposed to be released shortly after the PJR record because it was going to feature The National, Frightened Rabbit, Jonsi, etc. But then when the PJR album was released they completely ignored it.
What kind of "indie" music site will review the new fucking Kanye record but completely ignore actual independent musicians? It's not like they weren't aware of the record. Take, then, the new They Might Be Giants album -- I KNOW the reason they didn't review it was because it was really good. But it's not cool to say nice things about a They Might Be Giants record. If it had been a stinker they would have jumped all over it because they just loooooove writing reviews for records that they've given a rating of like 3.2.
I know it just sounds like I'm pissed that Pitchfork doesn't review the music that I like but that's not it. The thing that most bothers me is that they posture themselves as THE beacon of independent music, but what they are really doing is driving independent music even further into the margins by convincing people that the fucking Decemberists are still 'indie music'. And since you like THOSE jokers, hey, that's indie! You're there, you're hip, so look no further!

I'm just playing with you. We try not to assign unwanted custom titles anyway. Since we're talking about Pitchfork, is there any musical opinions by Pitchfork that you vehemently disagree with? Pitchfork has some stupid ratings but I have trouble getting up in arms about their opinions. I thought they really underrated the last frightened rabbit cd (winter of mixed drinks) and I kind of love tool and some Mars Volta (although I thought their lateralus review was pretty funny). Most of their electronic opinions I disagree with and don't even bother listening to (who the fuck is araabmusik, I have no idea). Best Coast is fairly lame, smith westerns are hit or miss at best, girls do nothing for me, I can't stand no age, I thought the newest deerhunter was pretty lame compared to microcastle, and even as the board's biggest Kanye fan I laughed out loud when I saw it was a 10.0 (i just ran through like six months of best new music selections to see which I disagree with for this) For the most part they don't review a lot of the stuff that we disagree on (stuff like brand new I guess) and I usually agree with their really low scores (mumford and sons, edward sharpe, Ghostland Observatory, and the head and the heart specifically). If something I like gets between a 6 and a 7 (this year I'm thinking of Joy Formidable and Braids) it's hard to get too riled up because the review will usually highlight a lot of strengths and talk about how the album can be improved. Since I mostly pirate music (shocking I'm sure), I usually form an opinion on albums before they've been reviewed by pitchfork. Oftentimes I'll learn about a band or a new release from their news section but realistically I only use their reviews as a reason to revisit an album I may have dismissed quickly. so for all the haters, what albums have they reviewed that really upset you? Fair enough. The only thing I really dislike about Pitchfork is that every other unknown band they hype is terrible. Most are too forgetable to mention, but Tame Impala's Inner Speaker was one of the worst albums I've spent several hours trying to "get." I generally agree with their scores for established acts, except Mars Volta as you pointed out. They hate that band. I still read their news section daily, but I've only read maybe three of their reviews in the last two years. Every time I see words like juxtaposition, I want to repeatedely paper cut the insides of my wrists. And who says YOU are the biggest Kanye fan on the board (rolling up my sleeves)?

uhg if I'd gone back farther in their best new music section I definitely would have listed innerspeaker as well. The worst part is that they've become fairly popular all over the place not just pitchfork. i love microcastle as much as the next person - probably even more - but personally, i think Halcyon Digest is an even better album I think most people would agree with you. I was just listing albums that I had a significant disagreement with pitchfork, realistically though pitchfork lines up with the consensus opinion so often that I was just listing off well reviewed albums i didn't like. HG, you've made this argument before and I think it's a very valid criticism. They definitely don't review a lot of uncool albums unless they want to rip it apart or praise it as a late career renaissance. They clearly prefer to discover new artists so that they can claim their first. It's a little lame but at least they aren't writing horrible reviews of them and regarding Kanye: Outside of cbats, I don't know anyone who likes Kanye a lot, so it was a treat to be surrounded by so many die hard Kanye fans

Yes, I know you are a big Kanye fan, we are pretty much the only ones on the board. It was you claiming to be the biggest Kanye fan on the board that I was questioning.
Actually, I don't read about music a lot outside of the board, and I don't watch videos or listen to singles, so I'm sure you have a lot more Kanye knowledge than I. It's not like I subscribe to his life or something.

I like Kanye a lot.
You can learn more about independent music from actually reading the news and reviews than from looking at the BNM list, because a lot of the writers know their shit and talk about artists that Pitchfork would never cover during the reviews of the stuff they do cover. I've discovered some good bands like that.
Also, the interviews can be priceless. I had never lsitened to Mirah until James Mercer mentioned her in an interview with Pitchfork.
Does anyone read Popmatters?

Does anyone read Popmatters? My mom sends me links to articles on that site a lot, but mostly only about film or books. (and that wasn't meant as a dig. I normally like what she sends me.) Belle and Sebastian - The Life Pursuit Pulp - Different Class Editors - In This Light and On This Evening Peter Bjorn & John - Writer's Block Peter Bjorn & John - Gimme Some Echo & The Bunnymen - Ocean Rain Elbow - Build a Rocket Boys! Devendra Banhart - Rejoicing in the Hands Devendra Banhart - Cripple Crow The Libertines - S/T

That interview was right before Wincing came out, but yeah I'd never heard of her. C'Mon Miracle and Advisory Committee are in my canon now, along with (A)spera

Switch got to me.... I've been listening to Bright Eyes all day. It's been rad background music for cleaning my kitchen and living room. "I'm Wide Awake It's Morning" specifically.
