Tell us about the 2013 lineup
« Thread Started on Feb 9, 2013, 1:50am »

Stole this idea from the Coachella board, but I think it could be a great way to help other board members learn about the undercard for this year's Sasquatch as well. Tell us a little bit about some of your favorite artists on the lineup that might be a little less known to other people. I'll keep an ongoing list in this post of everyone that has been covered.

I'll start with The Presets. (You know I love ya, HG ;) )

The Presets are a synth-pop duo from Australia that have been together for about a decade now. They've released three full-length albums and a handful of EPs under the name, and have been met with worldwide acclaim since their formation. They have an often dark and very sexy sound that I suppose can be described as electro-house/pop, but it is definitely unique in today's dance world, in that they feature live drums (rare for an electro duo...cough cough Sleigh Bells cough Crystal Castles) and have some really amazing vocals that sound like they were ripped right out of Violator-era Depeche Mode. I managed to catch about 10 minutes of their set at Coachella in 2011, and it honestly looked like one of the most high energy performance/crowd reactions I have ever seen at a festival. They're my number one most anticipated set of the weekend and I think they are more than capable of entertaining anyone who enjoys dance music of any form. I can promise whichever stage they are playing on is going to be an absolutely raging good time.

A stellar live performance and a couple of my favorite tracks:

Chvrches (sounds like "churches") are a new (2011) Scottish alternative electronic three piece band from Glasgow. Lead vocals are by Lauren Mayberry. Mayberry is also a skilled drummer, which for me always scores points. Though she is not generally on drums for Chvrches, I am expecting her to have a standup kit at the ready at Sasquatch.
This could be a sleeper or one of those shows like when XX hit the scene.
Think Kate Bush meets Gary Numan.

"Lies" (2012)

"The Mother We Share" (2012)

Earl Sweatshirt is quite possibly one of the most talented rappers that will be there the entire weekend. He has been rapping with Odd Future since he was 15 (as Sly Tendencies) and is working on his solo release 'Doris' which should actually be out by the time Sasquatch! rolls around. He does a lot of his own production under the name RandomBlackDude, the song 'Chum' that is listed as his song on the Sasquatch website was produced by himself. He is quite possibly my favorite act that made it on the lineup, such a great surprise.

Torche (pronounced "torch") is a metal band out of Miami, Florida, headed by Steve Brooks, who previously fronted Floor. They are characterized by their unique blend of sludge/stoner metal with pop sensibilities. As Brooks says: "I think the meshing of different sounds comes naturally just because we all have different musical backgrounds yet have a ton of common interests."

I saw these guys open for Corrosion of Conformity this past summer and was blown away. By far the best act of the night. Their ability to write and combine both crushing riffs and catchy melodies makes each of their songs instantly infectious. In this way they are a perfect fit for Sasquatch; "sunny day metal," if you will. Live they are on a whole 'nother level...I would count Brooks among the best guitarists currently active in the American metal scene. And these guys are funny as fuck and like to have a good time, and it's evident in their stage presence.

Basically, get stoked:

Shad, coming from London Ontario, has been one of the steadiest rappers of the last decade in Canada. His debut album 'When this is over' (which came out in 2005) was funded by winning a radio rhyming competition, and he has released 2 albums and an EP since (The Old Prince, TSOL, and melancholy and the infinite shadness). Very charismatic and down to earth Shad has created a loyal fanbase, had a couple hit songs, and is the lyrical kingpin of canadian hip hop.

The page was starting to lag with all of the embedded videos, so I went ahead and cleaned it up a bit. Let's just embed one video per post and then provide links to any other ones.

Radical Face is the solo project of Jacksonville's Ben Cooper, who is also one-half of Electric President. His 2007 debut Ghost showcased his fondness of storytelling, found-sound percussion, and acoustic, folky guitars. It's also a concept album based on the idea of houses retaining stories of things that have happened in them. Each song is a story and some of the stories are told from the house's point of view. His newest work, The Family Tree: The Roots is the first part in a three-album series following the tale of a fictional family, the Northcotes. The Roots is dedicated to the first two generations of the family's history, and bases its narrative in the 1800s. Think of the layered musicianship of Sufjan Stevens combined with the lyrical ferocity of The Mountain Goats, delivered in a breathtaking whisper. If you're going to Sasquatch to party, Radical Face may be a breath of fresh air in the middle of the day. If you're going to discover phenomenal music, don't miss out.

Wild Belle- indie rock band composed of siblings Elliot and Natalie Bergman, who grew up in Chicago. There Album should drop some time in March. Laid back beats with reggae undertones and a beautiful female singer makes them a must see. Hoping they will be on the Yeti stage on a warm sunny day.

Akron/Family are an experimental rock band, with heavy emphasis on psychedelia and folk.

Pulled from Wikipedia because I am lazy:
"Though each member of the band—Dana Janssen, Seth Olinsky, and Miles Seaton—can be relegated to loosely defined roles (vocalist/drummer, vocalist/guitarist, and vocalist/bassist, respectively), all members play several instruments and sing, as evidenced by their shows and recorded material: live, the band uses improvisation and three-part harmonies in prominence. On their self-titled debut record, field recordings of a creaking chair, thunderclaps and the white noise of a television find their way alongside psychedelic and electronic elements, guitars and a glockenspiel."

They have released 5 (soon to be 6) albums since that first one, and have vastly increased their sonic palette with each subsequent tour. These records are all very good, but their live show is truly phenomenal. I have been obsessed with these guys since seeing them at Bumbershoot 2009, which instantly became one of my top 10 festival sets OF ALL TIME. ALL OF MY 11 YEARS WORTH OF FESTIVAL-GOING TIME MOTHERFUCKERS. A LIST THAT INCLUDES BJORK AND WEEN AND DEERHUNTER AND THEN THERE'S AKRON/FAMILY. This is by far the most underrated band on the 2013 Sasquatch lineup and you should check them out.

Here is a mild teaser:

BONUS: They kind of look like Pea, Gramma and Geno with a beard.

Here is a full on epic jam with members of Sun Ra IF YOU THINK YOU CAN HANDLE IT:

Have you watched the Great American Mess tour DVD burrito? I saw them on that tour and have been a big fan ever since.

I have not, but I think I've heard a lot of things about that one. Was that when they were touring with 4 or 5 additional musicians?

Nah, this is a bit earlier than that. It's a fairly lo-fi recording of the tour after the split with Angels of Light came out. The band is just the four original members of the band (this was before Ryan went off to live in a monastery or whatever he did). I'd only heard the Self-Titled album before the show so I expected it to be a quiet folky affair. Instead they opened with this:

I hope that the Presets incorporate live drums into their show - I saw them last year at Treasure Island and there were no drums, just Dude #1 on keyboards / a laptop and Dude #2 singing. That said, I smoked a joint to the face right before they went on, so it is possible that there were drums and I just didn't notice or remember them.

They tend to mix the live drums in and out of the set, depending on the song, from what I've seen. Maybe that was the case?
