Any Vancouverites brave the rain yesterday for the free concert? I ended up making the last minute decision to go to the Zolas and Hey Ocean. I forgot how happy those bands live shows make me. And Hey Ocean was selling their new CD by donation so I got to meet the guitarist. I know, I'm special. Oh, don't get me started! I'm still so pissed I had to miss all of them! Instead, my manager came into work sick at the start of the week, coughed all over the place and infected half the office with the worst cold I've had in years. So after all the effort I put into changing my schedule around so I could go to the free concerts, I ended up curled up on the couch in a giant blanket for 4 days straight (and 2 of those being unpaid sick days). And I'm lucky enough to still be stuck working the back to back I had to schedule to the see shows too  But glad to hear you made it out and had a good time Davers! |

I'm so doped up on every type of sinus drug out there so I can make it through this shift, I'm not really sure I'm making sense. There's definitely a few questionable work emails I sent earlier. |

I just watched the throne How was it? I've never seen Jay-Z or Kanye solo, so this is probably wildly inaccurate, but it seemed like the middle ground between their two solo shows. A Kanye show would probably be more theatrical, a Jay-Z show would be more crowd-hyping and dudes-on-stage-passing-the-mic-around, real-shit I'm-from-Brooklyn-nigga-just-thought-I'd-remind-you freestyling. Some bits were obviously really scripted, including Kanye starting All Of The Lights over twice because there weren't enough lights ("like we rehearsed it!") and the following exchange: Jay-Z:
Kanye: Yeah Jay-Z, I try to pimp big but when I try to do that, [Gold Digger] I don't know what to do!
Jay-Z: Well then I have to say this to you, my friend Kanye! [99 Problems]
Does any of that sound unappealing to you?
Well you're fucking wrong if it did because it was an awesome show. I scalped the tickets for about $25 because I live in Pittsburgh and shit does not sell out in Pittsburgh, and I would've paid double for it, probably (face value was like $70, though, fuck that). They played for like 135 minutes or so and juuuuuust about everything anyone could've asked for. Going in, you knew that there'd be a "I saw Kanye & Jay-Z, and..." with the end of the sentence being something crazy and awesome, and this was, for me, the following:
"I saw Kanye & Jay-Z, and to close the show they played the first two verses from Niggas in Paris, and then they did them again with the ending, and then for an encore they came out and played it three more times."

SOFA KING excited for the Throne show.
I've seen both of them solo and that is a pretty accurate description of their individual shows. Jay-Z was really great live, but there wasn't a whole lot to his show, just him killing it. Kanye puts on a fuckin production with his shows.
The people I've talked to that have seen it have all said that this show feels like it has a much bigger Kanye influence. I thought the album felt like a Kanye album with a lot of Jay-z guest spots, so I'll be interested to see how the live show skews.
