M83. Holy. Shit. That was one of the best shows I've seen all year, and I totally didn't expect it. I went in thinking, "oh cool their new album is really good so it'll be cool to hear all of those songs". Once the show started though... LIGHTS. EVERYWHERE. Not only did their songs sound even better live, the light show was just fantastic. Best $15 I've ever spent. OH MY GOD I AM SO FUCKING EXCITED

So, the Arkells show last night was fantastic. The opening band, who I have now learned was the Rich Aucoin Band, blew me away. Everyone know the dancing man video from Sasquatch a few years ago, well his intro was very epic music with that video playing on the screens. Every 5 seconds or so, it would switch to text saying "(insert name) knows how to party like no tomorrow" and "Hanging out with (insert name) is like a Friday night in Las Vegas" and more creative and funny ones that I dont remember. All of those names were people at the show as a group of people would cheer every time a name flashed in one of those sentences. I dont know how he got the names, probably just went around asking people before the show. All of their music was like electronic mixed with rock. There was a guitarist, bassist and drummer and Rich did DJing and singing. Most of his songs started with some pop culture video clip like antoine dodson or the yelling goat then he worked his song in there. With the yelling goat one he got the crowd to scream with the goat, he somehow worked crowd interaction into every song. I'm sure this all sounds pretty stupid, and it sort of was, but once you stop caring about looking like a moron it is a shit load of fun. Then there was the giant parachute. Everyone remember when you were 7 in school and there was that big multicoloured parachute where everyone held the edges and you could run underneath? Yeah, one of those, but so much bigger. Add to that some confettii explosions and my mind was pretty much blown. After their set he put his phone number on the screen and told everyone to text him if we wanted a zip file of his album. I just texted saying I loved the show, he replied today with thanks and a line to the zip of his album. I could almost equate this to the Flaming Lips. Even if you dont like the music, the live show is still a freaking spectacle. So then the Arkells came on, and they were awesome. They are such a fun band to watch because they really enjoy playing for a crowd that is happy to see them. There were lots of sing-a-long part as most of the crowd seemed to know all the words to the songs on their first album. They even brought out the opening band for a few songs and out of the blue the lead singer says "Hey look, its Dan Mangen!" and then Dan comes out and plays a couple songs with them. All in all a fantastic night and I am really looking forward to seeing if M83 can top it tonight. Attachments:

Davers you are so... talk so much. I know, I tend to ramble when I type. I'm much more to the point IRL; I think I described this whole show to my roommate in about 30 seconds.

Dudes, I had such a great time at the Dan mangan show the other night. I was gonna come on here and talk all about all the highlights but then I remembered how Canadian racist everybody has been on here lately and I was uncomfortable talking about this rad Canadian dude who none of you 'mericans know about. And then I was like, shit what is this, a UFC message board? Bew-shit! So in the spirit of not making a "thread for Canadians no Americans allowed"; Goddamn dan mangan was a great show. It was the last night of his tour and he played a ridiculously long encore, bringing on all of his opening bands and pulling local musicians out of the audience to come play up on stage. I haven't ever seen him in Victoria before and I was amazed by the turnout. The lineup was around the block and there were 17 year olds screaming like fucking Justin Timberlake was playing. Beautiful venue, great energy, amazing show. So, how bout that NASCAR?

So M83 was great last night but it was totally overshadowed by something that happened after the show.
WARNING, story time, I am going to talk a lot again.
The show was an early one because on weekends the venue turns into a nightclub after shows, so it was done by 10. Because of this I made plans for around 1030 across town. I knew it would be cutting it close but I figured what the hell.
After the show ended there was a massive lineup to get coats since it was raining outside. We waited for about 20 minutes and were finally getting to the front. Then a guy comes up and tells kymess and I that he's in a big rush and would he mind if he went in front of us. We act sort of displeased and tell him we are all in a rush and have been waiting a long time. He says it will just take a second and sort of budges in front. I figure its not really worth it, but we each make a sarcastic comment about feeling important or something.
Then his friend gives him 4 more coat check tickets. This really pissed me off. I hate it when people break basic rules of society like lineups. I waited in the line even though I had somewhere to be, so what makes him so special? The following conversation went something like this.
Me: "Are you serious? At first I thought it was just you but now you are getting all those too?" Him: "It will only take a few seconds" Me: "I know that, but we are in a rush and have been waiting a long time" Him: "Well if you are in such a hurry you can go in front of me" Me: "It's not even really about me, all these people behind have been waiting a long time too" Him: "OK then, you can go ahead"
I grab my girlfriend, and we grab our coats and he just moves behind us and ends up infront of my other friends. They dont say anything so he gets his stuff after us.
Kymess, my girlfriend and I get outside to wait for the rest of our group and I see the guy again. I consider going to say sorry about what just happened, but then decide against it because I still think I was right.
The rest of my friends come out 30 seconds later laughing their asses off.
"Dave! Do you know who that was?!?"
My eyes widened. I did think he looked a bit familar and french accents arent very common in Vancouver. Shit.
"That was the lead singer of the band! He was shaking everyone's hand and stuff."
The thought actually had crossed my mind, but I never thought in a million years that the fucking band checked their coats in the same place as everyone else. Dont they have a backstage for that?
So there you go, a chance to meet the guy who made one of my favourite albums this year, and what do I do? I tell him off.
On the skytrain (subway) to the other place I was going I heard a few people talking about how "the singer tried to get his coat, and people wouldnt let him butt in line". Great, I'm now known as the guy who wouldnt let Anthony Gonzalez get his coat at his own show.

Wanted to see 'im in Athens since it'd be a hometown show and whatnot, but oh well awesome! we'll have to meet up with you guys before/after the show! (Cat and I don't have much interest in seeing Mangum)

I still don't think he'll be at any of those 5 (though I always end up proven wrong), but either way we will hang out and meet some of my awesome Charleston friends, and it will be great.

M83 somehow exceeded my ridiculously high expectations. Definitely one of the best shows I have ever been to. Jamming teen angst for like 10 minutes, I mean come on. So good. I grabbed a setlist after the show too, chyeah!
However, there was some douche that was texting the whole show and he was front row dead center. I wanted to just punch him in the face. I told him the show was in front of him numerous times and he always ignored me. When he wasn't texting he was taking photos on his iphone like 2 inches away from Anthony Gonzalez's face.

Jesus, look at all the M83 love? It's like saying, "I was high on E, and someone touched me, it was the greatest thing of all time!!!!"
The sound was really bad at the Portland show. There was this high pitched chalkboard type screech that even made the band cringe several times. Whoever was mixing that should be fired. Not M83's fault though, right? Maybe it was though, wasn't that their sound guy?
No one is going to comment on how the show was barely an hour when they said, "good night." Yes, they played a ten minute encore, and "Colours" almost literally blew my mind, but 70 minute headlining sets are cool with you? Sorry, not me.
Outside of the SHORT set, and the sound issues, I agree that was a pretty bad ass show. If they had played 30 minutes longer, it might have been top five this year.

I was so fed up with the crowd that by the 5th song or so I was ready for it to end. You are right though, there is no excuse for such a short set, especially with the size of his/their catalog.
Sadly, Midnight City was the worst sounding song of the evening and it's probably my favorite song of 2011.

I have been a huge fan of m83 since I was 15, so part of my love for the show was just stored up happiness from finally seeing them live. The sound was just fine at the late show in seattle so sound wasn't an issue. However, there set was only 75 minutes which did let me down somewhat. I would love to see them again at sasquatch in something like what deerhunter's timeslot was this year.
