After sitting on it for a day, I'm where about most of the boardies are from the sounds of it. Lineup is good with some eclectic choices but it simply doesn't come out to balance the ticket price. I know this is apples to oranges, but 3 day Primavera tickets were about 280 a pop and each individual day blows Thing out of the water.
But! I'm in the process of signing up to volunteer the festival. I'm assuming that brings some level of access for free, and I'd honestly enjoy just helping this Thing operate. If I can see a handful of the more interesting musicians I'd be over the moon.

Also, what the hell happened to my avatar? Jesus, I don’t log in for a couple years and everything just goes to hell.
*Seriously though, shout out to Nick and Burrito and anyone else who has been here trying to keep this place up.

Just heard back from STG and I have a volunteer spot for Thing! Not sure if it is still open but I'd encourage anyone lurking to throw your hat in the ring.

In a bit of a plot twist I ended up working Thing behind the scenes from some job connections. Festival was great, enjoyed DIDO as well. Some friends of mine ended up at This Ain't No Picnic which looked like a combo of Thing/DIDO.
In an alternate timeline Sparks definitely headlined late night Bigfoot timeslot. Absolute banger of a set, favorite of the fest.

I was lurking in the Coachella thread on inforoo for a week or so leading leading up to Coachella's announcement. Seeing Pea's participation in there made me especially nostalgic for the days of Sasquatch speculation and anticipation. I suppose I could make a new thread for this, and I will if we get a couple more decent rumors/speculation, but I think the first artist to consider for Thing 2023 is Sylvan Esso. Of course, this assumes the festival returns. Fingers crossed! I haven't seen anything official one way or the other. Hopefully there's a "see you next year" caption or something I missed. On Rachel Belle's podcast that she recorded live from last year's festival, she encouraged listeners to check out the festival next year. Back to Sylvan Esso. Thing 2019 was 8/24-25. Thing 2022 was 8/26-28. Let's assume Thing 2023 would be 8/25-27. Sylvan Esso very surprisingly skips the Seattle market on their newly announced tour dates: 8/22 Ogden, UT 8/24 Troutdale, OR 8/25 Vancouver, Canada 8/27 Bend, OR 8/30 Berkely, CA If my assumed Thing dates are correct, their only free night would be Saturday 8/26 on the way from Vancouver to Bend. Certainly could do it, but 4 shows in 4 nights might be a lot. Indigo De Souza is supporting that tour, so should be considered as well. Certainly not a lock. Maybe that Day In Day Out thing returns and they play that or something else, who knows. It just struck me as odd they'd skip Seattle. Anyway, I hope everyone is doing well! It was nice to shake off the old speculation cobwebs.

More speculation because I'm bored and missed this:
3 artists from KEXP's top 10 albums of 2021 were booked for Thing 2022: Nation of Language, Dry Cleaning (who dropped out), and Jungle. (Additionally, Durand Jones & The Indications were 18, Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio were 21, and and Curtis Harding was 25 - lots of representation).
Similarly, 3 artists from KEXP's top 20 albums of 2018 were booked for Thing 2019: Parquet Courts, Kurt Vile, and Snail Mail. (Khruangbin, Black Belt Eagle Scout, and Phosphorescent were also high on the list.)
I could see a similar trend recurring this year. Here's some of the list: 1 Wet Leg (not likely considering they played 2022) 2 Yeah Yeah Yeahs (they seem too big for Thing and they haven't played Seattle in 10 years despite reunion tours) 3 Fontaines DC (they play Seattle 9/22, but opening for Arctic Monkeys, so I don't think that's disqualifying and they were booked for Thing 2019 before dropping out, but if my assumed festival dates are correct, they have shows in Minneapolis and Chicago, so no) 4 Big Thief (no dates after 4/29 in Europe and no indication they'll continue touring this year after a busy year last year) 5 Beach House (no upcoming dates) 6 Odesza (even though they're local and played Sasquatch twice, today they were announced as a Bonnaroo headliner, so far too big) 7 Alvvays (just played the Moore Theater in October after 2 shows at the Crocodile in the spring. they're playing Spokane, Victoria, and Vancouver in March. Jungle played the Paramount in October of '21 before playing Thing '22) 8 Beyonce (obviously too big) 9 Hatchie (only one upcoming tour date. unclear about this year after a busyish 2022) 10 The Beths (two gigs at Neumos in February. I do not think that rules them out. Goose played Neptune February 2022. Sparks played Showbox March '23. Jose Gonzalez played two nights at Neptune March '23. There's precedent for artists to play the market in the spring and return for Thing)
So of that list, I think the most likely options are Alvvays and the Beths. Others from near the top of the list I could see playing include Spoon, Sudan Archives, and Nilufer Yanya (previously played KEXP in '19). But no matter what, there's a pattern of booking artists from the top of KEXP's best albums of the year prior.
