General Info
Members: Mac Demarco ( vocals & guitar)
Touring Members: Andrew White (guitar, keyboards & backing vocals), Pierce McGarry (bass & backing vocals), Joe McMurray (drums) & Jon Lent (keyboards)
Biography: Mac Demarco is a goofy Canadian Indie Rocker, born in Duncan, BC and grew up in Edmonton, AB. After finishing high school he moved out to Vancouver, BC and released a self-produced album "Heat Wave" in 2009 under the name Makeout Videotape. In an interview with Nardwuar he noted that he met two of his current touring members (Joe and Pierce) at a house party in Vancouver. These two were playing in the band Walter TV, which Mac also became involved with as a bass player. Mac made the move to Montreal in 2011 to start recording his own material again and in 2012 released his first LP "Rock and Roll Nightclub" and only half a year later his first studio album "2". Demarco began extensive touring after the release of "2" and eventually moved to Brooklyn and began working on his 2014 release "Salad Days" which he recorded in his apartment. 2015 was another big year for Mac as he continued his impressive tour schedule which included the festival circuit while also releasing another ep "Some other ones" and a mini LP "Another One"; in an interview with Rolling Stone, Mac explained "...when I start to go crazy from touring too much, I start writing a new record" which explains why he has 5 releases in the past 4 years.
Sounds Like: Alex Calder, Homeshake, Beach Fossils
Genre: Indie Rock, Psychedelic Pop, Lo-Fi, Jizz Jazz (this is his own description)
Suggested Listening:
Here is an upbeat song off of his album "2" which got me into Mac originally.
He is such a huge fan of Viceroy cigarettes that he wrote a song about them:
Finally here is a live version of "Salad Days", one of his most popular:
Physical Reaction/Live Show
Mac Demarco is a blast live, his catchy songs stir up the crowd and in no time everyone including him are crowd surfing and jumping around. In between songs he'll talk about his girlfriend (sometimes he brings her out with him), make jokes or just talkabout random stuff which just adds to the experience; this dude and his band mates are hilarious. Mac also frequently does covers including Reelin' in the years (he's a big Steely Dan fan), Enter Sandman and Smells Like Teen Spirit.
Interesting Facts
On his latest album "Another One", on the last track he gives his real house address and invites people over for coffee; loads of people have taken him up on the offer and he has since stated "I don't know what the fuck I was thinking". Many people label him as a slacker, based on his style of music and fashion sense but he disagrees and points out his large amount of tour dates. He will typically write all music by himself and individually record each instrument one by one at his house in demo form and then will do a cleaner version with better equipment somewhere else. He is a pretty humble guy ".. I don't buy nice clothes, expensive food or drive a nice car. I'm like the Richest Bum".
Personal Notes
I heard "Freaking out the neighborhood" a few years ago and further explored that album and basically became and instant fan. I was really impressed with Salad Days as well and he jumped up my list of must see artists real quick. His sense of humor really speaks to me which just adds to my fandom. If you have a half hour, check out his documentary "Pepperoni Playboy" or if that's too big of a commitment, this video is also hilarious:
