M83
M83 is a French band that sings mostly in English. Similar to acts like The Cure and LCD Soundsystem the band revolves around one member: Anthony Gonzalez. The band was formed by Anthony and Nicolas Fromageau in 2001, but Nicolas left the group after their second album. Since then the band has acquired various members and at the beginning of the month they announced that they are looking for a new female singer and keyboardist, so if you can sing and play keys (and possess a vagina) then give them a ring and meet them in LA. They’ve actually done this once before in 2011 and acquired Jordan Lawlor, and she is still in the band.
Anyway they’ve been a band for 15 years and have 6 albums. Despite being around for a long time and putting out consistently good music in my opinion they never really gained much traction until their most recent album, ‘Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming’. I’m not pretending to be some long standing fanboy since the first time I heard of them was Sasquatch 2009 and they’ve only released one album since then. That’s all the band history I’ll do since I don’t really think it matters all that much.
The best genre I use to describe them is dream pop. There’s lots of synths, the music builds and flows very nicely and for some reason goes really well with snowboard videos as I’ve seen a bunch of their songs in Red Bull videos and the like lately. Their sound has stayed fairly consistent over the year
Members: How the hell should I know? I already said they are auditioning for a new person. I do know that Morgan Kibby is not in the band anymore and that makes me sad, but she went on to make White Sea which is pretty excellent in its own right.

My sentimental favourite is Saturdays = Youth. They probably will have a new one out by Sasquatch though. They are all good but listening to all of them in a row can be a bit of a challenge, because their sound hasn’t evolved in any major way. They will likely play mostly songs off the new one and ‘Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming’.
Similar artists: I Break Horses, The Naked and the Famous. Maybe some Caribou, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, The Juan Maclean, uhh… Daft Punk? I’m bad at this.
Some songs. I very much recommend headphones or good speakers. Shitty computer speakers don’t really do them justice.
Midnight City. Yes this is the big single that you’ve probably heard. Yes it’s kind of annoying. Don’t judge them on this if it’s the only song you’ve heard.
Run Into Flowers. Look, they are more flowy and musical than that one song you know.
Teen Angst. An older one they might even play live.
My Tears are Becoming a Sea. Bonus snowboarding I was talking about. You can expect a few songs like this to be played live and it is quite epic.
Couleures. Every time I have seen them they close with this and it is pretty much perfect.
Also for entirely no reason here’s a story about when I saw them in 2011 that I have already posted on this board before and just copied and pasted.
The show was an early one because on weekends the venue turns into a nightclub after shows, so it was done by 10. Because of this I made plans for around 1030 across town. I knew it would be cutting it close but I figured what the hell.
After the show ended there was a massive lineup to get coats since it was raining outside. We waited for about 20 minutes and were finally getting to the front. Then a guy comes up and tells kymess and I that he's in a big rush and would he mind if he went in front of us. We act sort of displeased and tell him we are all in a rush and have been waiting a long time. He says it will just take a second and sort of budges in front. I figure its not really worth it, but we each make a sarcastic comment about feeling important or something.
Then his friend gives him 4 more coat check tickets. This really pissed me off. I hate it when people break basic rules of society like lineups. I waited in the line even though I had somewhere to be, so what makes him so special? The following conversation went something like this.
Me: "Are you serious? At first I thought it was just you but now you are getting all those too?"
Him: "It will only take a few seconds"
Me: "I know that, but we are in a rush and have been waiting a long time"
Him: "Well if you are in such a hurry you can go in front of me"
Me: "It's not even really about me, all these people behind have been waiting a long time too"
Him: "OK then, you can go ahead"
I grab my girlfriend, and we grab our coats and he just moves behind us and ends up infront of my other friends. They dont say anything so he gets his stuff after us.
Kymess, my girlfriend and I get outside to wait for the rest of our group and I see the guy again. I consider going to say sorry about what just happened, but then decide against it because I still think I was right.
The rest of my friends come out 30 seconds later laughing their asses off.
"Dave! Do you know who that was?!?"
My eyes widened. I did think he looked a bit familar and french accents aren’t very common in Vancouver... Shit.
"That was the lead singer of the band! He was shaking everyone's hand and stuff."
The thought actually had crossed my mind, but I never thought in a million years that the fucking band checked their coats in the same place as everyone else. Don’t they have a backstage for that?
So there you go, a chance to meet the guy who made one of my favourite albums this year, and what do I do? I tell him off.
On the skytrain (subway) to the other place I was going I heard a few people talking about how "the singer tried to get his coat, and people wouldn’t let him butt in line". Great, I'm now known as the guy who wouldn’t let Anthony Gonzalez get his coat at his own show.
