Holy monkey fuck, that is cool. ...although they can leave all of their nifty light bulbs at home as long as they bring that marimba player with them. THAT is the thing that I am talkin' bout. Yeah, I'm pretty sure Trent Reznor will show up. He's the one playing it. I expect to hear some songs from Ghosts, can't recall how many include the marimba. It is pretty cool hearing that thing in action. Edit: Also, I totally called it a Xylophone earlier. I guess I need to educate myself about some of these specialty instruments. Re-edit: A marimba is a type of Xylophone.

A marimba is similar to a xylophone; the difference is that a xylophone is a series of chuned pieces of metal (kind of like bells, but flat), whereas a marimba is generally made of wood and relies on the acoustics of a collection of gourd-like spheres to create its sound.
To the ear -- a xylophone sounds more precise; clipped, almost mechanical. The sound of a marimba is more spacious, warm and organic.
To MY ears, the marimba is among the most pleasing sounds on the planet. To see one played well is breathtaking.

It's nice to have the decision validated. The 100 level seats were significantly closer to the stage, but I just didn't want to be seeing everything they were doing from a sharp angle. I think this kind of depends if you want a really good view of the artists, or if you want a good view of the stage production. You definitely should have a view facing the stage better if it is any thing like their recent big arena production. For Lights In The Sky the had gigantic LED panels in front and behind the band, so you really had to be facing the stage to see the visuals as they were intended to be viewed. I thought the seat would be really good because we were ridiculously close to the stage, like to the point that we could see down into the backstage area. We had a great view of the artists, which was cool. This was on the tour before their first Sasquatch performance and they had a big mesh net/screen thing around the whole stage with video images and cool light shows projected onto it. I saw videos from the floor section after and realized how much of the effect I missed out on.it was the closest I've ever been to disappointed with a NIN show, which is still pretty fucking far from disappointed. It was still an awesome show, but the other two times I saw them was at the Gorge, which really isn't a fair comparison for any arena show.

I looked online and there are still GA floor tickets for the Spokane show. I'm so tempted to just order them, but $166 for 2 tickets would wreak havoc on my budget right now.

I'm going to the Spokane show, because it is the closest one to me. I might actually have an extra ticket come November. I bought an extra and my girl probably can't go. I have a friend that keeps asking about it, but I won't count him in until the last minute. Since I bought fan club presale the only way to get my tickets is while I'm walking in the door the day of the show.

If I haven't ordered one by then, I might be your huckleberry.

I was listening to Ghosts again tonight and started noticing the Marimbas, and had to go find something to confirm I was actually hearing what I thought I was. Some of it could easily be confused with keys or piano. There is a lot of it in Trent Reznors movie score work as well I think.
