Hey guys,
I know quite a few of us live in Calgary. What is happening with the floods is terrible and I just wanted to say stay safe to everyone. I was evacuated last night but am now safe at a friend's place. Hoping everyone is alright. Let me know if there's anything I can help with.

This whole thing is absolutely ridiculous. Disasters never really hit you until it happens to someone you know. I hope all of you guys are safe up there. Especially Shax. With his profession I know he's got a lot of stressful and potentially dangerous work ahead of him.
I'm curious though, what caused the flooding? Just lots of rain or was it a result of a dam breaking or something along those lines?

Over 180 MM of rain (about 6 inches) in mountainous areas over a period of 24 hours. The soil can only absorb so much water so it's all being dumped in to the rivers. 2 separate rivers converge in Calgary and both have flooded due to the rain and the standard spring thaw surges.

Yikes. Sounds like the kind of surges that threaten my area every year but have yet to get to that kind of destructive level.

I'm hearing that things might be starting to calm down a bit. Hope this is true! I've heard that this is a once every two hundred years type-flood. Insane. My deepest condolences to anyone that has lost their house during this ordeal, or to anyone that has lost any loved ones (reports of death in High River.) There will be a huge need for volunteer support of all kinds in the coming days/weeks and I'm sure all Calgary boarders will do what they can in order to help get the city back on track. Stay safe guys.

Stay strong Calgary folk. I am still trying to get word from some friends that were going up there for the festival. They generally turn their phones off whenever in Canada so I am not too worried about them but still I catastrophize things in my head all the time. Sending good vibes your way.

Everyone good? I've got space if anyone needs a place to crash.

If Nater offers me citizenship I will become Canadian and help fight floods in the future.

With his profession I know he's got a lot of stressful and potentially dangerous work ahead of him. I'm curious though, what caused the flooding? Just lots of rain or was it a result of a dam breaking or something along those lines? D'awwww thanks buddy. I actually don't work IN Calgary, but in a town about 15 minutes outside of it that isn't in a flood area. I don't start work till tomorrow, but we're all part of the same team so I imagine I'll be spending a lot of time in the city. I did pick up a shift in Calgary last night to help out. Luckily the Emergency Management Agency did a pretty great job over the last 24 hours evacuating people. Still no reports of any deaths or major injuries which is great. I was driving around checking out the river last night, and it's crazy how much it changed over the course of the night/morning. It was caused by a crazy amount of rain over the last couple of days coupled with the last of the spring run off. Calgary has two rivers in it. One cuts right through downtown and the other wraps around it. To put things in perspective... a river that is deemed safe to canoe in usually flows at 60 cubic meters per second. One of the rivers last night was flowing at over 1500 cubic meters per second and the other one was over 1000. This video pretty much sums up how bad it is. Super lucky to live in an area in Calgary that is safe from flooding. If anyone knows of anyone affected by this and is without a place to stay, hit me up.

Glad you guys are okay Shax! I can't imagine evacuating your giant puppies. Even though the days coming up are probably going to be pretty long and awful for you wonderful emergency services types, I'm very glad the people of AB have you in their corner. You're a good man.

I was out and about today with my family, and while we are not completely in the clear, it appears that water is subsiding and 65,000+ have been advised that they can return home. Good luck to them!
I am a residential claims adjuster for a major insurance company, so tomorrow should be an interesting one for me. I hope that I will be able to do some good for some people...that is if they can find an alternate work site for us, since my office is in the middle of the still evacuated zone.
I hope that everyone out there is still doing well and looking out for one another. Take care!

My friend was able to return home today. He had at least 8 feet of water in the groundfloor of his home. Shoes floated to the tops of closets and became wedged on the wooden bar that holds the coast hangers. I'm glad everyone is OK, but man that would suck so hard.

So Sled Island got cancelled Friday AM, which sucked ass. But today a local bar hosted a fundraiser show with a ton of kickass bands. Raised 12k. Best $10 I ever spent. I'm exhausted.
Yesterday a friend hosted a house party fundraiser with a few bands too. They raised a grand.
Calgary is pretty okay sometimes.
