When the NRA controls the gun debate, things like this happen. When we allow a ban on assualt weapons to expire, things like this happen. When we have the easiest of access to killing machines, things like this happen. When we pour all funding into killing other people at war, rather than taking care of our most vulnerable citizens, things like this happen.
Although times like these make me feel completely hopeless, I always try to remember what the wise Dr. Suess once said, "Unless someone like you cares an awful lot, nothing is going to get better, it's not."

I can't even remember the last time I felt this sick over a news story. I'm at such a loss for words, and all I want to do is leave work and go hug my mom and her students. Nothing is sacred anymore.

When the second amendment was penned, guns took 30 seconds to reload. Now you can fire as fast as you can pull the trigger. This law needs a serious 21st century update. This is just horrible.

I don't think I've ever read anything on CNN that has made me cry before. This is so wrong.

I am completely at a loss for words over this. How many more fucking mass shootings need to happen before people take a serious look at gun control. What's disheartening is that the news of this tragedy will likely inspire people to go buy guns of their own to feel safe, instead of addressing the root of the problem.

The real issue is mental health in my opinion. Gun control is also a huge issue, but damn people... seek some fucking help.

The problem with mental health is that a lot of people can't tell that they require help. Their thinking seems completely rational to themselves.

Looks like the shooter's mom was also found dead. The circumstances surrounding her death have not been made public, but she may have worked at the school.

Once again this will spark the debate about gun control but you're never going to get rid of all guns and if you can't get rid of them all people who want them will continue to get their hands on them.

The problem is also that people who would seek help may have no insurance, and no money to pay for it, just like any other health issue.
To anyone who tells you "if the teachers had guns, this wouldn't have gotten so out of control," we have a higher percentage of our populace "armed" than any country in the world, and it controls nothing except the occasional break-in or mugging. Most guns should be illegal to own, sell or possess. MOST guns, like every other civilized country in the world.
But it's going to remain politically toxic to raise this issue, so nothing will happen. Guaranteed.

If these people really want to hurt others, they will find a way to do it. They could jump into a truck or bus and do just as much damage. Do you think if there are no guns available they'll just give up because any other method of hurting people is too much work? No, their minds are gone, and they are most likely determined.

You can't kill 18 children and 27 people in an elementary school with a truck or bus.

The whole thing is fucked up, but it kind of bugs me that people want to focus so intently on the method these crimes were committed, instead of the fact that they were.

Well, it'd be pretty hard to massacre a bunch of little kids with a knife without at least 30 staff members tackling you and beating you up. The method is important because there is no similar alternative.
