There must be others on this board who've read this. A Song of Ice and Fire by George RR Martin is the best fantasy series I've read, probably the best ever written. It transcends the genre, but alas everything must be classified somewhere.
On Sunday a dream comes true as Game of Thrones will make its television debut on HBO. Its sure to be a landmark event as Game of Thrones will be the most talked about new series of the year. Here's a really exciting quote I from a review for the series..
I know there are fans of HBO programming on this board so hopefully a few of you will be watching, but i'd like to encourage everyone else to give this series a shot. If you don't like fantasy do not let that dissuade you from watching this as it is not restricted by the stereotypes of the genre. Season reviews are available and there is already an emmy buzz for Peter Dinklage. My second born son shares his character's name, Tyrian. Although in the book its spelled Tyrion.
Something important to note is that Game of Thrones is the most HBO has EVER invested in a series, by a landslide. Take an hour on Sunday night and try to catch it, I promise you will thank me later!

"A Song of Ice And Fire” is to normal fantasy what “The Wire” was to typical cops-and-robbers drama, packed with grit, complexity and flawed human beings making their way through a corrupt and intimidating world… HBO’s treatment of the text is scrupulously faithful—and terrifically entertaining in the best HBO high drama tradition…"
