Not at all. Drafting a D-man rarely works out, and almost never helps in the immediate future. I'd rather they package up a few guys and trade for someone in the 26-28yr old range with some experience. I'm 100% against wasting high draft picks on D-men. I know a lot of people are saying that Edmonton just needs to make some trades for a good number 1 or 2 D-man, but if you really take a look at any of the guys that may possibly fit that bill and are on a team that can use some of the parts we're able to move... they all have 'no trade' clauses. Every single one of them. I'm doubting most would be willing to waive it to come to Edmonton as well. I don't have high hopes for Suter wanting to come here either. Unfortunately I can only see us getting more "role players" that will be hyped as "great players" on defense via trade. Or will get another Cam Barker type guy that no one wants to touch with a ten foot pole. Until our young guys are locked into long term contracts and we start looking like a winning team it's still going to be very tough to lure top tier talent here. |

I agree with Alex here. After playing RNH for 10 games it was apparent that he was one of, if not THE top player on the team. Doesn't matter what age they player or what organization, if you are that important to your teams sucess, you're playing. I don't deny that RNH looked great, but any hockey professional knows (or should fucking know) that 82 games in the NHL is much different than 10. The proof is in the pudding, 3 young kids come into the league and have already been plagued by injury. What's the point (how have they repeated the same mistake 3 times!)? I still feel that we are not in a position to feel we have elite players on lock. To me, those entry level years are a precious 3 years where the player is fucking OURS for those 3 years. Don't risk having 2/3 being half season's and growing pain seasons. Even if they're looking amazing at 18 there's no way they can effectively help the team, unless we're talking about a team that's already flying and on a legit upswing. They haven't even played with men yet! There are bound to be kinks to work out and a huge risk for injury. I really think that despite the amazing young talent we have that the management has shot this team in the foot by throwing these kids into the NHL without any acclimatization of playing with bigger, stronger and more physical players. The farm teams are also a great place for young guys to learn how to play NHL hockey and systems (which are a thousand times different than Junior hockey) as well as to hone the skills of the systems and style its NHL team are trying to develop its players to use. By the time Hall is healthy and can put together a full season (which I think will be a great season) he will be in his RFA year and on everyone's radar without really ever experiencing strong success and leadership affinity from Edmonton. Yay! We get one (one!) good and full season from him. Great job management. I don't see why he wouldn't be heavily contemplating the benefits to not signing a long term deal at that point. To me Hall's decision to sign a long or short term contract will be the most crucial moment for the Oilers. |

I know I sound like a super downer about the OIlers, but I'm not. I love the team and really like the picks they've taken and hope we have all of them for at least a good 5 years. However, in today's NHL you can't overlook the trends and ways the player's mentalities have shifted which are starring at you in the face. This year alone, Parise and Weber have both only extended they're RFA contracts by 1 year. Those dudes play on good teams with legit talent and have both been to the playoffs already (Parise has also experienced injury issues). Team stagnation was a reason for both guys to hold out on signing a big contract. Both of the cities they play in are arguably a million times better than Edmonton. Not a good sign because as things stand we don't have the surrounding personnel and goalies to make that one year extension give them a reason to stick around longer like both NJ and Nashville have and are currently proving this season and this post season.

I think if the management knew they would tank down the stretch they would have sent RNH down. At the time the decision was made Edmonton looked like they had a legitimate shot at the playoffs. Also, despite injury he looked good for alot more than 10 games.
That being said, I tend to be like you in that I'm more prone to push for a team to tank/rebuild and become a contender than hover in mediocrity like the Canucks did for years. They way that the Canucks became back-to-back presidents trophy winners I have always thought they were very fortunate with. Kesler and the Sedins magically jumped up 1 or 2 levels after seeming to plateau. It doesn't usually happen like that.
Still, most Canadian markets are filled with fans that disagree with that mentallity and don't put up with tanking when you have any shot at the playoffs. It totally makes sense what you are saying, but the Oilers would just be even worse without these kids... like probably one of the worst teams ever. Pragmatically, I agree, who cares. If you are going to come 11th anyway you might as well tank to the max.
On the other hand, Oilers fans know full well from recent experience that all you need to finish is 8th to have a shot at the cup.

That NY/Caps game was crazy. Holtby was amazing considering he's 22 and that was his 21st NHL game ever. He has way too much composure for someone his age. I really hope the Caps go far based on him standing on his head.

False. I quite enjoy the sport. I'm just big on supporting your local team, and since Seattle (for god knows why) doesn't have an NHL team, I've never had a real reason to get into the league. BUT SINCE I HAVE $5 ON THE KINGS I'M GONNA BE A SUPER FAN FOR THE NEXT MONTH.
