Lately I've been re-listening to this Doo-Wop box set I bought years ago, and good goddamn I don't know if I'm just getting more sentimental in my late 20's life, but these tunes are just beautiful as all holy hell. I've always loved this stuff, my grandparents always had it on when I was younger and later in my teens, when I was obssesed with Paul Simon and heard he was gaga for all things Doo-Wop, I bought my very first Compact Disc box set.
"Life is but a Dream" by The Harptones has always been a favorite of mine, just really moving, some of the most stunning vocals ever, and a dream-like pace that has all the transportive qualities of the trippiest of tunes that hadn't even begun to be born yet.
Have you heard the Mister Heavenly album, FD? Lots of great throwback sounds to the old doo-wop stylings on that record. I've always been a fan of a genre myself, and that album really re-sparked my interest.

I haven't yet. It's been on the to do list though.

I gave Out of Love a listen last night before bed. It was enjoyable, but I couldn't help but feel that their entire "Doom-Wop" can be pretty well summed up and out done within one Mr. Bungle song, "Vanity Fair". I will definitely give it more listens as it is still fun stuff.
Speaking about modern 50's influences, They Might Be Giant's "How Can I Sing Like A Girl" is one of my most favorite. It's got that doo-wop rhythm, "Sleepwalk" guitar, but it also still feels like a catchy 90's tune. Plus I think the song itself is clever and funny. Not sure if I'm reading too much into it, but I think they chose the doo-wop thing because while Grunge was over masculizing 'er thing in the early to mid 90's they were using a style in that song that once featured the voice of men who sang like girls in the lead (not doing falsetto, but good ass singing like The Imperials) and were the epitome of cool to kinda poke fun at the whole uber male rock scene going on in the wake of Nirvana.
Speaking of "Vanity Fair",
EDIT: I think any band doing any form of music can almost be summed up and out done by a Bungle song from California.
HEEEEEEEERRRRROOOOOOOOOOO HEEEEEEERRRROOOOOOOOO dID bLACk man really just yell that or did I get way to high this year for this line up party foya schwindiggies yoy know what I mean to the max?
Fuck Yeah! It's good to see Primus back, and making some killer new material. Didn't that just hit stores today? I have to get it, and I won't settle for a download.

I've been streaming it; a download isn't going to do for me either. That shit is on green vinyl and it will be mine.
Green Naugahyde is every bit as good as their very best material, and substantially better than even some of their better albums. I'd take it over Pork Soda and even Tales From the Punchbowl, which I love. And that's just at first blush. This could even give Sailing the Seas of Cheese a run for its money.
I was already optimistic about Jay Lane on drums after the handful of times I saw Primus last year, but MY GOD he is a fucking titan on this record! I can't believe I'm even saying it, but he puts Tim Alexander to shame.
Great, great shit here. I'm so happy about that. With TMBG's Join Us, R.E.M.'s Collapse Into Now and the Decemberists' The King is Dead, it looks like 2011 is the year of the Triumphant Return to Form.

I dunno, I don't say it casually. It has that same mean edge as Seas of Cheese, but twenty years on the musicianship is far better and it doesn't have the same pacing issues that Seas of Cheese had. The middle stretch of Seas of Cheese is great, but 'Eleven' and especially 'Is It Luck?' kind of have a meathead quality about them that I've never minded leaving to the, um, less intelligent faction of Primus' fans.
I'm NOT saying it's better; Sailing the Seas of Cheese is one of the best albums of the last twenty years, and it's only gotten better with age (like, say, a fine cheese). Green Naugahyde is gonna need some time to air out a little bit before I can really say, but I can absolutely say that it's their best since Sailing the Seas of Cheese.

Yeah it's a pain in the ass; you have to 'Like' South Park on Facebook to access the stream, for some reason. Or you have the option of using Grooveshark, which is much easier and faster and not quite as asinine.

Green Naugahyde is on Spotify. I'm not sure if it works in Canada. It is supposedly new to the U.S. I am not sure if you can just get a Spotify account right away either. I think it might still be invite only.
