The Sheepdogs were unreal tonight in Calgary. They played a, surprising, near two hour set that ended with a fantastic cover of Neil Young's "Down By the River". Fucking awesome! After winning the Rolling Stone cover contest and opening a recent jaunt with Kings of Leon it was nice to see how humble they still are. They played a kick ass bar here in Calgary for a few hundred people and the show did not disappoint. If they roll through your town, be sure to check them out.

So Watch the Throne....holy shit. This show was completely off the chain. Almost three hours of two of the biggest rock stars in the world playing hit after hit and throwing the crowd into complete madness. 16,000 people packed into an arena partying their ass off.
It was a total spectacle, from the two of them starting on huge platforms on opposite ends of the arena, to the massive american flag and fireballs that went off during "Otis", to Kanye starting "All of the Lights" over 4 times because there wasn't enough lights, to the absolute riot that went down when "99 Problems" dropped.
And then there was Niggas in Paris. They played it 11 (11!) times to end the show, each time crazier than the next.
Best concert I've ever seen.

ITT: White people continuing to use the word nigga. I feel like it's acceptable if it's the name of the song, no? It was pretty funny, during "All of the Lights" there's that line "MJ gone, our nigga dead". So when he was playing it the music cut out to try and get everyone to sing it, except NO ONE sang it because the crowd was like 75% white. Everyone started laughing and Kanye stopped the song and said he wanted all the black people to give the white people permission to sing it....so he started it again....and it was really awkward.

I know it sounds ridiculous, but it totally works when seeing it live. It was like nothing else I had ever seen before. I was pretty skeptical when I read about it, but seeing them perform it over and over while asking "again"? and the crowd just going crazier and crazier was amazing. It kind of sums up this whole Watch the Throne thing, just totally over the top. ha ha, just found a video of them doing it 10 times. It's 40 minutes long! That shit cray.

I know it sounds ridiculous, but it totally works when seeing it live. Is it always at the end of the show that they do it multiple times? I think it's kind of amazing that Jay & 'Ye can play over 40 minutes of the same song and people are more than happy to listen to it. It speaks to what charismatic moneymakers they are and how gullible fans are to be stoked on a completely nonsensical gimmick. It's half megalomania and half psychology experiment. I love it.

Of course it's at the end - how do you follow that? From the second I heard about it I thought it sounded like the most incredible thing. It's the best song from that album, by far (imo), and it's a face-melter. Megalomania, for sure, but that's why we like these guys. It's not unique though - Ween got booed offstage for playing the same song four times in a row a while back (I forget where or when this was...but I bet I know who knows).

I meant that I know their hits, have heard a couple of their albums, but am not familiar with all their stuff or the album they released together. I wasn't sure if playing the same song 11 times was symbolic of their work together, a fan thing or whatever.

I interpreted it in a different way than you meant it and was questioning how anyone familiar couldn't be familiar with these two artists since the complete permeate everything possible.

I have never listened to a Kanye record all the way through. And I seriously can't stand Jay-Z.
I like some hip-hop, but not a whole lot and none that would ever be considered popular. I am fascinated by Kanye as a person, but the bulk of rap music from the last ten years really isn't my bag.

Yeah that might be a 'had to be there' type thing because I cant think of a song in the world I would like to see performed 11 times in a row instead of the artist playing 11 different songs.

I wouldnt go as far as to say it sounds awful, I like that song a lot, but I given the amount of material those 2 have I think I would have prefered some other songs in the 40 minutes rather than the same one 11 times.
