Bali Girls were fine but they weren't really my speed. Cool! I am glad you got a chance to check them out During that Kinski set did they play mostly new songs? I haven't had a chance to listen to their new album yet but I am curious on the influx of vocals.

Yeah their set was almost entirely their new stuff. I think I heard a couple songs from Down Below, It's Chaos, but nothing from Be Gentle With the Warm Turtle or Alpine Static. They seem to be moving away from the math rock/post rock label and into general rock n' roll, at least where their live show is considered.

So I don't want to spoil anything but....Akron/Family played the best show I've ever seen them play tonight (and this was my fifth time seeing them). Weird as fuck but it was pretty clear that they had seen Swans once or twice in the last couple years. I don't know what it's going to sound like at Sasquatch since they can't play the 2 hour set they played tonight but goddamn I wouldn't miss it.

Fuck yes dude. I have heard only the loudest, noisiest, best things about Akron's recent shows. Sasquatch will be my fifth time seeing them and I anticipate the most remarkable of religious experiences.

Have they ever played a show with Swans? I would bet so, since they made an appearance on The Seer. Hanging out with Swans has to seriously effect some dudes.

Have you never heard them? Shit is dark. I would save it for the worst day of your life.

I don't know that they've ever played a show with Swans per se but they were Michael Gira's backing band for a number of years when he was recording as Angels of Light. It's not Swans but I'm sure some of the Gira magic rubbed off on them.

You ought to get on that. I think either one of their last two albums is a good entry point. The Seer is the better of the two but My Father... is probably more accessible.

Maps & Atlases were absolutely amazing tonight. They definitely live up to their reputation as great live musicians. Young Man was decent. I think they are heading west from here. Definitely worth checking out.

I saw How to Destroy Angels at the Regency Ballroom last night. It was an amazing show. Although not to the same scale, the production was on the same level as Roger Waters' most recent The Wall tour. After the show, I watched some videos of their Coachella performance. Last night's show seemed much better for one main reason: the crowd was much more into it. Sure, it's much more of a visual display than anything else (Trent even said they spent over a year creating it), but the crowd was full of NIN fans who love everything Reznor does - except one guy next to me who commented on how it was amazing they were selling out shows only a few weeks after their album had been released... The vocals were mixed pretty low, but on songs that featured the vocals like "Ice Age," "How Long?" "On the Wing," and "We Fade Away," Mariqueen sounded great. She only addressed the crowd once (before the last song of the main set), and Trent never said a word, but it was a great time nonetheless.

First of all, I got to meet Nick last night! Had a blast rocking out to TTNG and Tera Melos. What a fucking show. The opener was called By Sunlight and they were pretty snooze-tastic. I had to step outside during their set. TTNG picked it up though. Their set inspired Nick, his buddy and me to buy their vinyl. Good shit. Tera Melos was out of control good. It was the most coherent version of them that I have seen. They played a lot of tracks off of X'ed Out. "Slimed" rocked my world. There was super annoying guy to my left that kept screaming "40 Rods, play 40 rods" over and over and over. I am sure it annoyed the band and they didn't play that song (I am guessing because of that d-bag). It was a really good time!

More fun fax: Akron/Family's first 4 albums were released under Gira's Young God record label, and the first 3 were produced by Gira himself.

Maps & Atlases in Bellingham last night was a great show. It was nice to see the “City of Subdued Excitement” have a lively crowd. People were dancing and it was a packed house. The opener (Young Man) was kind of meh for me. Maps & Atlases played a cover of Tears For Fears - "Everybody Wants To Rule The World” and it was fantastic! If you don’t have plans in Seattle tonight you should probably go see them play at The Crocodile.

I think The Neptune is slowly becoming one of my least favorite venues in Seattle. The actual building is awesome. But the staff leave much to be desired. They cut off Blue Hawaii's sound despite the fact that they had about 2 minutes left to go in their last song. And it's not like they were trying to meet a curfew - the show got out at 10:45.
But! Blue Hawaii was amazing, and Purity Ring was pretty fun too - but holy shit I did not realize how much of a hit they've become with the candy kids. I got asked several times if I had any molly. And one girl asked me if I was doing Animal Day at Sasquatch this year.
Maybe I just need to stop going to all ages shows.
Blue Hawaii: A Purity Ring: B+
