WHY? was everything I needed and wanted it to be. The crowd was pretty rowdy and fun and it was LOUD. Yoni is awesome and asked the crowd for some BC bud and there was a bag with probably a quarter in it passed up.
The lovely KY bought me a poster which was really really nice and I am so thankful! Fox and I went on a scenic tour and safety meeting and had to hide from swarms of Canadian police. I seriously need to move closer to all of you. If anyone hears anything about people needing a roommate let me know. This needs to happen soon.
Thank you for another great weekend!!

Why? was pretty good. The lead singer was in a bad mood, so it brought me down a bit. He got pissed about technical issues early in the show, and cracked a joke about what an asshole crowd it was near the end of the show. I loved the extra drummer, and the two female keyboarders, but the lead singer wasn't interested in dancing as much as usual, so I left disappointed.
Everyone who had an opinion of Astronautalis (the opener) thought it was the worst shit they've ever seen. I on the other hand thought it was one of the more entertaining openers I've seen in a while. Sure he is a fuckwad douchebag with a stupid haircut, but he was genuinely a funny guy who put on a great show and got the crowd moving. I respect that. I laughed out loud at least five times, and I wasn't laughing at him because of his emo love songs. He used to be a battle rapper, so one song he asked the crowd to give him topics to free style about (which ended up being nine topics), and he pulled it off decently. Battle rappers are like chicks with purple hair, I have an enormous soft spot for them.

Astronautalis is a big deal out here in Minneapolis (honestly, every white rapper is famous here) and I feel pretty much the same way you do. He's a mediocre rapper but a solid freestyler.

I've got about a 40 page thesis I've been writing in my head over the last ten years about what makes live music great, and how 80% of the people who attend live shows are completely fucking wrong. One section is about how openers get no credit because people are impatient. People get wasted, and they want to see their favorite band, so if you are in their way, you fucking suck.

When I go to shows by myself I usually go early enough to catch the openers. I have discovered some of my favourite bands that way. I have argued and screamed at idiots who heckle the openers, and that is why if I'm not in the mood for that, I skip them. I try to see my favourites on headlining tours because sometimes I just don't have the energy to put up with people yawning and talking and screaming while the music I am enjoying is on.
I think it's a broken system, and the only way to fix it is to slap some people in the face.

I believe he does the crowd-sourced freestyle every time he plays. The guy is an insane free styler.

I liked the freestyling part best. He was a pretty huge douche but I was entertained.

I loved the extra drummer, and the two female keyboarders, but the lead singer wasn't interested in dancing as much as usual, so I left disappointed. I have seen Why? 5 times now since 2006, and every time the band has been progressively more interesting, and Yoni (the singer) has been progressively less so. As you may expect, I am very interested in your thesis. I happened to read your posts tonight in between two of the best openers I have seen in quite awhile (psychedelic rock bands Kingdom of the Holy Sun and Folkazoid opening for Psychic Ills) and I immediately began compiling two mental lists. Let's see how many I can remember after 3 solid hours of face-melting guitar shreds. Current Favorite Bands Whom I First Discovered As Openers:Dirty Projectors, opening for Hella Fuck Buttons, opening for Caribou Eluvium, opening for Explosions in the Sky Isis, opening for Tool Sleeping People, opening for the Locust Russian Circles, opening for Red Sparowes Other ones... Current Favorite Band Whom I Missed Because They Were An Opener Before I Knew Who They Were And Are No Longer Performing Together As A Band And I Will Never Forgive Myself:Emeralds, opening for Caribou ...and those are just the ones I listen to and think about on a regular basis. Basically what I am saying is LISTEN TO WONK. WONK IS EDUCATION. GIVE OPENERS (and peace) A CHAAAANCE.

Fuck Buttons, opening for Caribou Eluvium, opening for Explosions in the Sky I caught Fuck Buttons opening for Caribou and Mogwai. Each time was a hilarious display of previously mentioned 'wasted folks waiting for their favorite band' covering their ears. I caught that Eluvium show. I was already a huge Eluvium fan, it just didn't work. There was no show, so everyone treated it like the music playing between sets. I don't think they even dimmed the lights? I still don't get ambient live, and I know you do. That was also the first Explosions in the Sky show I realized, "these guys aren't THAT good." Speaking of ambient music, you should check out Lil B's Rain in England one of these days. I have a couple notable openers. Wolf Parade opening for Arcade Fire was my first Spencer Krug experience. The Builders & The Butchers are one of my favorite local bands, and I first saw them opening for Portugal. The Man. The Quick & Easy Boys are a local band I need to see a couple times a year, and it's because I showed up early to a Deer Tick show (and I don't even like Deer Tick). Does LCD Soundsystem opening for Arcade Fire count? Oh yeah, and that crazy fucker Jello Biafra opening for Murder City Devils. Oh, and Monotonix opening for Bad Brains, Tricky opening for Tool, No Doubt opening for Bush, that annoying fucking theremin player opening for Grinderman, Boys II Men opening for MC Hammer, that terrible Holy Ghost! band everyone is jizzing over opening for Justice, Jawbreaker AND Ween opening for Foos, ect, ect. I have fallen out of grace with openers the last couple years, so it's something I'm actively trying to change. I used to go to so many shows solo, the time between sets became a reason I showed up late. It usually bored the hell out of me. If you're going to a show with friends (which I know 99% of you require), you have people to converse with during these intervals, so there's no reason to show up late. Take the free music, you already paid for it.

When I go to shows solo I do this on my phone in between sets. Half of the time I will do them sober and half of the time I smoke weed, which also happens to be the reason to show up late.

Y'all if given the opportunity to see Chelsea Light Moving or Mac DeMarco, do that.
Thurston Moore has still got it even at 54. Mac DeMarco and his band are the epitome of entertainers, and even if you're a little bored by the recordings, the live show bringz da enahgee.

Last night I went to The Shakedown (Bham) and saw F.ight Amp , KEN Mode and Black Tusk. Rowdy night to say the least. Made for an extremely difficult work day but worth it. F.ight Amp are from New Jersey and brought the noise. I picked up their LP because they blew my mind. KEN Mode is from Winnipeg and were very death metal sounding. Their frontman was super intense and expressive. Not normally my style but their live performance sold me. Black Tusk are from Savanna and were so much fun. It sounded like Red Fang went to a rodeo. The vocals were interesting to watch as all three members had parts in each song.

Lord Dying was outstanding on Saturday night. Those dudes really bring the noise and I cannot wait for their Relapse debut. I picked up their 7" from 2011 and a rad beer coozie.
I thought that Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds were going to be a lot different than they were live. They fucking ROCKED. Even tracks like "Jubilee Street" were transformed into massive, crushing jams. Nick Cave was incredibly engaging. I kept on imagining this is what Jim Morrison must have been like. They are going to blow the socks off of Coachella attendees. Enjoy!

Bali Girls - C+ Mark McGuire - A- Kinski - B
After time to recollect, Kinski was good but mostly forgettable outside the new songs they played. Bali Girls were fine but they weren't really my speed. Mark McGuire exceeded expectations and is amazing in general.
