Typhoon delivers lyrically driven indie rock/folk that utilizes swelling crescendos, beautiful and touching soft ballads and lots of great energy. Make no mistake, this is not your average trite “oh hey” indie folk garbage. The instrumentation is fresh and unique while the lyrical content is diverse and deals with concepts such as death, sickness, love, and most recently, memory. Kyle has a distinct vocal style that is both engaging and passionate and works well as the centerpiece of this very large band.

Suggested Listening:
My first exposure to Typhoon was their 2011 EP A New Kind of House, which I immediately fell in love with. That being said, I would recommend starting with either White Lighter or Offerings. The former is quintessential Typhoon while the latter is the most representative of their current sound and what we are likely to hear at Sasquatch. Offerings is a bit of an outlier compared to their previous discography due to the fact that they abandoned the brass section because they didn’t feel as though it fit with the theme of the album. I’m not sure if they’ll bring the brass section to Sasquatch or not, but when I saw them in early January they did not have it with them.
“Rorschach” from Offerings

“Dreams of Cannibalism” from White Lighter
“Morton’s Fork” from White Lighter

“Starting Over” from Hunger and Thirst (the music doesn't start until about a min in)
“Belly of the Cavern” from Hunger and Thirst
“The Sickness Unto Death” from Hunger and Thirst
“The Honest Truth” from A New Kind of House
Physical Reaction/Live Show :
I’ve seen them twice. The first time was on their White Lighter tour. They crammed all 11 members on a tiny stage in Spokane (anybody familiar with The Bartlett will know just how small). I was front row and subsequently was blown away. Their crowd interaction is so fun and familial sorta like we’ve all been friends for years and they give off a certain warmth that is really special. The second time was this past January and was the first stop on their tour for Offerings. They were in great form that time as well but the venue wasn’t great and admittedly, I miss their brass section. All in all though it was still an excellent set. They have two drummers and do some really fun things with them. Specifically, one drummer will start a fill and the other will finish it. As a drummer myself I’ve greatly enjoyed watching them play off each other. Anyway, they are great performers and will undoubtedly deliver a memorable performance at Sasquatch. If you know the words be sure and sing loud!
