Ed Droste – lead vocals, keyboards, guitar, omnichord, autoharp (2002–present)
Christopher Bear – drums, percussion, glockenspiel, xylophone, keyboard, lap steel guitar, backing vocals (2004–present)
Chris Taylor – bass guitar, backing vocals, keyboard, wind instruments, producer (2005–present)
Daniel Rossen – lead vocals, guitars, keyboards, autoharp, banjo (2005–present)
They are from Brooklyn.
Discography:
Horn of Plenty (2004)
Yellow House (2006)
Veckatimest (2009)
Shields (2012)
Painted Ruins (2017)
Sounds Like the Fleet Foxes and Liars had a baby that took a dip in the rabbit hole and after experiencing otherworldly encounters returned to the "real" world with whimsical wisdom.
Genre: indie rock?
Similar Artists: Fleet Foxes, Sufjan Stevens, Beirut, Beach House (yes and not really to these to be honest haha)
Suggested Listinening:
Kind of expanding on a shitpost post here but...every album other than Veckatimest took me a while to fully buy in on. When I first heard "Knife" I knew I was in love.
Went out and bought Yellow House and was kinda lost with it. I listened to it a few times and then set it aside. Over the course of a year or so I would occasionally put it on. The songs tend to meander and don't really have hooks. They can be dreary and beautiful at the same time. The record should be listened to as a whole in my opinion. This song always leaves an impression on me:
The frequency which I was listening to it increased over time (because it is amazing) and then Veckatimest came out. That record seems to have more...hits? At least catchy enough for Peugot to include "Two Weeks" in one of their commercials (making the big bucks fellas!)
The record seems more like a pop record. Catchier songs I guess I would say. Instant gratification. They never lose their weirdness despite appealing to a wider spectrum as seen on "Ready, Able". God those vocals are something else.
With Shields, that took the same route as Yellow House for me. A much "headier" listen. There is just so much going on in that one it just took more time to digest. This time I knew it was going to click though so there was never a doubt. They let it spaz out a little more.
Painted Ruins was the same for me as well. Neither of their past two records made it on my year end list but retroactively they would most definitely be in the top third of each of those years. I've never seen them live but this is going to be amazing at sunset Not sure if they get much more animated during their shows or not but here is something I found from a radio show:
Long ramble sorry. Grizzly Bear is special. Their music burrows into you. Hibernates for a while (haha get it? Grizzly Bear? Hibernate?). It is extremely rewarding and beautiful. I have never seen a full set from them and I can't freaking wait for it to happen at the most magical place on earth.
