AUTOLUX
Official | Wiki | 30th Century Records
General Info
(mostly from wikipedia, some from my memory)
Members: Eugene Gorester (lead vocals, bass). Eugene tends to be the lead singer in this band, but all three members will sing lead vocal duties, depending on the song.
Greg Edwards (vocals, guitar, keys). Greg was also a member of several other bands, the most significant being the 90s alternative rock band Failure.
Carla Azar (vocals, drums, keys). Carla is perhaps the most prolific member of the band, having played drums with artists such as PJ Harvey, John Frusciante, and most recently on Jack White's solo albums.
Biography: Autolux formed in 2001 in LA when Carla and Eugene worked together on the score of the play Accidental Death of an Anarchist. They recruited Greg, and played a few shows in the LA area.
Major Discography: While the band has been around for a decade and a half, they have only put out two studio albums so far: 2004's Future Perfect, and 2010's Transit Transit. True to form, their third album is to be released 6 years after their previous, and is to be titled Pussy's Dead and released on April 1 via Danger Mouse's new label, 30th Century Records.
Pussy's Dead artwork:
Sounds Like
Genre:
Alternative Rock, Experimental Rock, Shoegaze, Noise Pop, Electronic, Post punk, krautrock
Similar Artists:
Sonic Youth, Radiohead, My Bloody Valentine, Can
Similar Sasquatch! Artists: There aren't too many that are extremely similar. I think fans of The Cure will enjoy Autolux, and maybe the closest in sound would be the post-punk acts like Savages and Protomartyr.
Suggested Listening
I'm the kind of guy who prefers consuming albums in full, and since they only have two albums, I highly recommend listening to their two albums. Future Perfect is a great place to start. However, for those who want some more guidance, I'll give you some of my favorite songs of theirs and try to show the great variety that this band has to offer. I'll focus on live performances, since that's how we'll be seeing them, although youtube has a dirth of high quality clips of their performances.
Start off with one of their older hits, Turnstile Blues.
Another great song from their debut album, Plantlife. You should definitely hear the Sonic Youth influence in this one:
One of my favorite songs from them, Blanket. This one really rocks.
Now I'm going to jump ahead and show you a song from their upcoming album. This should give you an idea of how the band's sound isn't stuck on the sound you heard in the previous two songs. The song is called Soft Scene, and I don't think we've had any live performances of it yet, so here's the music video:
This is a studio performance of a few songs off of their second album. There are songs with each member singing lead, so you can get an idea of how they each perform. While it's a studio show, I think we might expect their set at Sasquatch to have elements of this multi-instrumental way of performing rather than the guitar/bass/drums from their usual live shows.
This next song is the other single released for the upcoming album, so again, music video instead of a live show. Greg sings lead on this one, and you'll notice it is quite a bit less shoegazey or experimental than some of their older material. I think this will be a great tune to sing along to when they play it at the Gorge!
Finally, a teaser for their album, which shows that they will still be bringing the noise, even though the singles are both a bit mellow:
Physical Reaction/Live Show
I haven't seen these guys yet, so I can't say for sure. I know I'll be up front going crazy, but I guess we'll see if anyone is there with me. Based on the videos I've seen of their performances, they are very solid performers and have a lot of energy.
Interesting Facts
I haven't seen the movie, but "Frank" starring Michael Fassbender is about a guy in a band, and Carla Azar is the drummer in his band.
As previously mentioned, their upcoming album is being released by the new record label from Danger Mouse. Autolux was the first band that he signed to this label.
Personal Notes
I love love love this band. I know they won't be right up everyone's alley, but I'm personally really excited to see them returning, and so far their new music seems just as good as ever. Hope you guys like them!
