With respect to Canadians and tipping... in situations that warrant a tip (bars, resturants, hair dressers, etc), I think Canadians tip pretty well. I know I automatically tip 15% on most shit.
But then there are things that we dont tip on. I dont tip the maids when I stay at a hotel in Canada. I dont tip if I get gas at the co-op full serve gas bar (I know for a fact they arent supposed to take tips!). I dont tip at starbucks (though I do tip at non-chain coffee shops). So I think rather than saying Canadians are bad tippers, I think its more likley that we come from a different culture where our norms dictate that we tip or do not tip in different situations.

Since I don't have a guest bed, I let my guests sleep in my bed, and I sleep on the couch. I let my guests sleep in my bed, and I sleep in my bed with them. I win.

15% is the low end of "acceptable" tipping by American standards. That's all I know.

15% is standard, and we don't typically tip on those services either, Sara(h).

15% is the low end of "acceptable" tipping by American standards. That's all I know. 15% is standard. I tip 20% if I'm happy. I can't go lower than 15% even if I'm unhappy without feeling like a dickface though. I think what a standard tip should be should be based on what folks are making / what minimum wage is. If minimum wage is 6 bucks, fuck yeah I'm going to tip a lot more. Anyway, off topic. Canadians are awesome.

I've tipped the maids in American hotels just to make sure Canadians don't look bad...
I also tip my hair dresser, waxer, taxi, etc. Tons of tipping up here.

I feel like 15% is low end, 18% standard, 20% is high.
Listen, I LOVE Canadians. LOVE them. A LOT. But so far the South is winning in this completely unscientific poll.

It also depends on other shit. If I go to a pub and nurse one beer for 2 hours, yeah I'm going to give a bigger tip than if I'm only there for 10 minutes.
Lots of factors.

Uh..I usually just round the cents up to the next dollar and then add a few more dollars. Even if it does mean I end up tipping as much as 35-40% on my bar tabs, it doesn't seem like much when I think of it that way.

Got it, Sarah. It's not that serious.

I think most people (in WA at least) double the sales tax and that is the tip.

15% is perfect. As someone who's been a server that was pretty much what you expected. Anything over was bonus and it was expected that if you wanted more than 15% you needed to earn it. Giving 18% as a standard is kinda a waste of money unless you are consistently thrilled to death by your services.

As an American I do this becasue I hate math and like being generous at my own monetary demise.
