Hopefully this doesn't lead to someone on here wanting to kick my ass too. Although that particular situation spiraled into an arguement about satire and the halocaust....
It's not the message or the medium that I have a problem with in the whole Kony 2012 thing. Is it good that it's "trying" to raise awareness about the situation? Absolutely Do I think IC is the best outlet for people to try and involve themselves to make a difference? Not really.
My problem is all the people on our friends list that are grade A slacktivists. They get real serious by taking 15 minutes of their life to watch and post a video. Then they make it seem like they care so much and then pass the buck by not doing a thing afterwards. Whatever makes you feel like you've served your moral obligation to the world for the year I guess. Of course there are exceptions. But not everybody is like Fig and willing to go out and try to make a change for something they believe in, but they sure do act like it. Am I somehow involving myself in the plight of Uganda? Aside from giving the red cross $600 to teach me how to train people first aid... nope. I sponsor a child from Honduras, I've run substance abuse workshops and career days for the aboriginal community, and I fucking save lives for a living. So my conscience is pretty clear and I think I try and do my part to make the world a better place. But I'm not so pretentious to post a video and say "BE THE CHANGE YOU WANT TO SEE" and then punchout my moral timecard.
