The last show I went to was 11/23 at The Crocodile. It was Helms Alee, He Whose Ox Is Gored and Wild Powwers. Wild Powwers opened shit up with a blistering set. The finished up with a 10+ minute cover of "Dazed And Confused" with Ben Verellen (guitarist for Helms Alee) stepping in on guitar. It was verrrrrrrrrrry good. He Whose Ox Is Gored played and I am pretty sure that is going to be what the apocalypse will sound like. Then there was Helms Alee. They played their excellent new album front to back. After that they talked to the crowd about how this was their 10 year anniversary of playing together. Lots of good vibes talking about recognizing pretty much everyone's face in the near sold out Crocodile. They continued to play hits from their catalogue and even came out for an encore. First time I have seen them play with visualizations behind them. I love the Seattle rock scene so much.

Aphex Twin at Day for Night was the most insane experience I have ever had witnessing live music.
It's not even close, you guys.

Day 1: Splendid Emblem - ambient field recording type stuff Herman Kolgen - sweet heavy Berlin School of Techno style sound design Chelsea Wolfe - heaviest set of the weekend, ended full Jimi, playing guitar with her teeth Banks - filthy sex music made meh by the fact that she was lip-syncing for most of it The Jesus And Mary Chain - sounded like they had never aged, played all the hits. Left after "Just Like Honey" to see the end of OPN Oneohtrix Point Never - Mostly played Garden of Delete stuff from what I saw, very dance-y and crazy Odesza - uuuuuuuugh Aphex Twin - Highlight of my entire life of live music. Completely insane. Summoned a torrential downpour halfway through the set, right when he dropped the first acid bassline. Just made everybody dance harder. Played a lot of remixes to start, among them Andy Stott and Jlin, and then moved into the AFX. Played some stuff from the soundcloud dump, a Tuss track (!!!!!!!) and some other hits, but it was mostly new shit, and fucking insane. If this is what's going to be on the docket for 2017, holy fucking shit Aphex will rule the world. Completely awesome. Best show I've ever seen. Temperature plummeted from 80 and humid to 47 and windy as shit about the time the rain hit too.
I saw a song or two from Thundercat and Lower Dens as well, but that was it. Lots of running around! I had never seen Odesza before and I was optimistic, since I was only sitting through them to get a spot for Aphex Twin, but oh my god you guys. They are not a good band.
Day 2: Nothing - nice heavy shoegazy stuff from Philly, nice way to kick off a 37 degree day 2. Daed - crazy acid/breakcore, his glasses fell off twice Matmos - THEY BROUGHT THE WASHING MACHINE! Live sounded totally different from the record. Washing machine beats are the best beats. Anklepants - ACHY BREAKY LOLLIPOP GO TEAM! GO TEAM! ACHY BREAKY LOLLIPOP GO TEAM! GO TEAM! Liars - played a lot of Mess which was fun to finally see! Squarepusher - the most insane seizure-inducing light show of the weekend, and probably the most crisp sound I've ever heard at a live show. played mostly Damogen Furies with some hits after Little Dragon - showed up 15 minutes before their set without any gear because of plane mishaps. Borrowed some stuff and killed it anyway Butthole Surfers - Played the hits! they were great, another dream come true Arca - made everyone in the crowd question their gender identity, and dropped some crazy tracks while the screens showed goats giving birth
Kamasi Washington went on about 20 minutes late and I really wanted to catch some of Liars before Squarepusher, since they had to cancel at Sasquatch a few years ago. Also Squarepusher went on right on time, so apparently Kamasi played for all of 25 minutes. Womp womp.

Butthole Surfers - Played the hits! they were great, another dream come true I saw the Butthole Surfers open for Nirvana in 1994. First concert I ever went to. No real point to that story. I just like to say it.

Murder City Devils and Constant Lovers last night were both awesome. I have seen Constant Lovers multiple times but never in The Wild Buffalo. The Buff usually caters to the college crowd with 90s dance nights, jam bands, aging hip hop (Sir Mixalot, Warren G etc) but every once in a while they book something that appeals to me. It is probably the nicest venue in town even though my favorite is The Shakedown. The one problem is sold out shows there kind of suck. It is difficult to get a good spot if you have to go to the bathroom or if you go back to get a drink. Minor complaints though. Seeing Constant Lovers play to a full room with a lot of first time customers was awesome. MCD were fantastic. They sounded perfect and there was a senses of urgency about them that I needed to hear. Wonderful night.
Blacksmile, how was the Seattle show?

Wonderful night. Blacksmile, how was the Seattle show? The Murder City Devils at The Crocodile fucking crushed it!!! We got there fairly early so we got a nice spot to the right side of the stage with the drink railing separating us from the monstrous pit that evolved during the show (too old for that shit). WE had the best view and I really loved how high the stage was. This dolphinately deserves the status of being one of the best venues in North America. The Murder City Devils played with such intensity and seemed to be enjoying themselves. They played for about 1.25 hours and then that was that. No encore other than Spencer Moody giving some speech about peace, love and the power of music. Having never seen Constant Lovers, I had no idea what to expect and I WAS BLOWN AWAY!!! They were incredible and seemed be a lot more jazzy and funky than I was expecting. They were unreal and I really hope that they make their way up to Calgary at some point. Corey J. Brewer was fine I suppose and I may have been more interested if he was opening for a different band. It wasn't really what I was looking for before seeing Murder City Devils. Interesting visuals though. Overall our trip to Seattle was pretty stellar and I am looking forward to heading back again for Radiohead. My Friday was spent wandering around by myself as my wife was still working that day and we tried to stay away from the tourist places for the day. I went Singles Going Steady and picked up a couple of records and then crossed the street to have some pints and chili cheesedog at Shorty's. Prior to the show at The Crocodile, we went for dinner and drinks at pub called Buckley's. The food was great and we ended up having breakfast there on Sunday again before heading home. Saturday we did more of the tourist attractions (Chihuly Garden, Seattle Booze/Bites Tour and Pike Place), after having breakfast at Biscuit Bitch (WOW!!). It was a great into trip to Seattle and I am looking forward to a bit more exploring when I come back in April!

Last Wednesday I went to a show at Black Lodge.
Slow Code opened it up. I've been trying to catch this Seattle three piece for a while now but timing always sucked. FINALLY saw them. They are even better live. Kind of throwback 90s guitar rock. Very good.
Great Grandpa was next. I hadn't heard of this band. They are a five piece. The lead singer has a quirky delivery and she is pretty entertaining to watch. A tad psychedelic but definitely a rock band. I think we will be seeing them in the KEXP world soon if they haven't been already.
Gnarwhal was badass. I hadn't heard of them either. While I was waiting for Slow Code to start I thought I recognized a dude but couldn't figure out where. When Gnarwhal took the stage it hit me. The dude is the drummer for Yautja and Mutilation Rites. He is an animal! Gnarwhal is a drum and guitar duo and they were noisy goodness. Picked up a record from them.
Pile was incredible. I am not the most familiar with them but a lot of friends really dig them. They were fantastic. I can't believe they played Black Lodge. I was talking with some people that are their friends and I guess this tour is their last of this size. Next time around they will probably be at Neumos or Chop Suey. Heavy, weird, melodic. It seemed like if Liars just played heavy rock music. Weirdos in a good way.

The bands that play at Black Lodge sometimes make me wish I enjoyed being at Black Lodge. Come to Black Lodge on 6/30! It is Gaytheist's record release show. My wife and I are going for sure and I think a bunch of our other friends will be there. If you aren't enjoying the vibe we can step over to Victory Lounge for a drink.

I don't know what the sound guy at Kremwerk was smoking, but he should lose his fucking job after the catastrophe that was Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith. The low end was completely out of control, dominating the room and shattering any goodwill I've had towards Kremwerk in the past. This was by far the worst sounding show I've ever heard in my life, to the point that I had to leave the venue for a bit. And I was even wearing earplugs!
We did see a couple separate people go up to the sound guy and talk to him, and the second half of the show sounded slightly better, but for a concert I've been looking forward to for over a month, it was like getting slapped in the face by a soggy porcupine. I hope she plays a better venue here in town soon.
First Neumos, now Kremwerk. Why do I even live in Seattle anymore?
