Just burn the sound guy and tape down the lo cut on every channel of his mixer.

Without booze in me it's going to be tough, but eventually I'm going to go up there and start pressing buttons in front of dude's face if this shit keeps happening. Worst case scenario I get kicked out of a show I don't want to be at, best case dude hears the improvement and relinquishes control to the Crane Boys.

The Planetarium album listening party at the laser dome may be my favorite show so far this year. Like, holy fucking shit.

Can't speak to their actual live performance, but the album itself is right up there with Age of Adz as one of my all-time favorite Smurfjames works. Similar styles across the board, with cool electronic squiggles and a whole lot of Impossible Soul-esque autotune.

Like, what happens? If it's just listening to an album I'd probably rather go see an actual show.

Layers upon layers, too. It was one of the best visual experiences I've seen.

Went to The Highline for Blood Incantation on Sunday night. It was probably my favorite show of 2017. The openers weren't really my thing but Blood Incantation is a can't miss. I was buzzin from that set until...well I am still buzzin. They were so tight. I'm no death metal expert but the way they incorporate the psychedelic spaced out parts is masterful. I would go see them again in a heartbeat. The banter from the lead dude was awesome as well. Seem like genuine people not trying to fit in with the scene.
Qrixkuor was the second band that played and they were fucking hilarious (in a bad way). They were doing the soundcheck with normal clothes and you could see their faces. They were pricks to the sound girl and I felt kind of bad for her. It went on for about 5-10 minutes with them coming off as assholes and then when they got it how they wanted it they mumbled something in the mic. The girl asked what they said and the dude snarks back at her "2 minutes". And then they walked off stage. My group were all joking that this better sound insanely good and were a bit confused about what the 2 minutes thing was. They came back in costume. They were all in black with blank black mesh covering their faces. The bassist had arm guards with spikes. They wanted to come off as some otherworldly vortex of death metal but they literally just were on stage for all to see being whiny little d bags. I couldn't take them seriously at all.
TRIUMVIR FOUL opened things up but I only caught the last few songs. They may have been good but I was in line getting beer and dicking around. Wasn't super focused on their set so I guess I shouldn't say they weren't my thing. It sounded pretty badass actually.

I almost went to this show but I had a project due Monday morning & I worked all Sunday... would have been a bad time. Glad you had fun, though!

Qrixkuor was pretty bad in Victoria, too. They kept fucking up and eventually the frontman had to give his guitar to the second guitarist because he broke a string and couldn't seem to fix it. They started about 30 minutes late and only ended up playing 3.5 half-assed songs haha.

First day of Terrorfest highlights: Isenordal, UADA and Samothrace were the best, I didn't stick around for Wolves in the Throne Room but the fog machines were working overtime when I left. Lycus was alright too. Missed Graves at Sea but caught the Highline afterparty with Crowhurst, Aerial Ruin, and John Haughm's acoustic set. Sound in Neumos was marginally better than Deafheaven, but it still sounds better upstairs behind the speakers than downstairs in front of them. So. Much. Fucking. Bass.

Day three of Terrorfest: Marissa Nadler was incredible, and her set could have gone on forever. She also covered "Blood and Tears," eat your heart out Danzig. Yob, Forn, and Bell Witch were all suitably heavy, and a great time, Yob being the standout. Coven was... well, they peaked when the lead singer came out of a coffin after some weird Satanist ritual was piped in over the PA. The actual music was just... meh.
Overall: good festival experience, but pales in comparison to Migration Fest. The huge number of cancellations, questionable afterparty bookings, and the existence of an entire day of goofy death metal (Cephalic Carnage??) didn't help matters. Probably won't shell out for the 3-day pass next year, but will keep an eye on this one.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds last night was easily top ten shows for me all-time. It was the softest and heaviest I've seen him. Back and forth. The friend I bought tickets with bailed last minute, so he gifted the ticket to a guy who had never heard of Nick Cave. Replacement dude did a little homework before the show, but mostly went in blind. And he was more blown away than I was. I at least knew what to expect.
Everyone says, "oh, my favorite band, that show rocked so fucking hard, oh my god." Most of those shows probably sucked. You are just drunk/high and happy to be listening to your favorite shit live. Nothing wrong with that.
But it got me thinking, what acts can you bring someone in blind, and them actually get blown away? I've spent at least 73 minutes since last night thinking about this. Bruce Springsteen, Arcade Fire back in the day, a little bit of Mac Demarco, maybe the Foo Fighters. Les Claypool acts, Maynard acts, Nine Inch Nails. But for musicianship, lighting/images, and actual human performance, I can't think of anything that beats Nick Cave.
Disputes? Alternatives? Agreements?

Wonk left downtown Seattle and visited a neighborhood to see Mutoid Man, Helms Alee and He Whose Ox Is Gored. All I have to say about that show is HOLY SHIT MUTOID MAN. They ripped Neumos a new one. Fantastic show!
