Um, I am pretty sure no one put you through any ringer. And that joke is not referring to soldiers being a threat to women and children. That implied a lot more.

i can't speak for the rest of the world, or even the entire united states military. so i'll speak for my own experience:
the many people i've met in the various countries i've traveled to all seem to actually have a very favorable impression on the United States military. i've never met a bad person or a person who seemed to harbor ill feelings toward me or any of my fellow shipmates. Not one time. Some of the places I've been to include: Italy, Greece, Dubai, Spain, Sicily, Malta and Croatia.
i think outsiders/foreigners may have a little more intelligence/patience than you might think. i'm sure those same nice people i've met have also met a few juggheads in their day. but just as we don't believe EVERY middle easterner is a terrorist, those same people don't think EVERY American service member is a jackass.
I'm not of the theory 'one bad apple spoils the bunch.' And I have a suspicion that most other people out there feel that very same way.
But those are just my thoughts on the issue.

I think it is more the embarrassment I feel as a US citizen on behalf of our administration sometimes. I love living here, but sometimes I just want to hide in a corner when I read the news.

sure. however, while the America political infrastructure is far from perfect: corruption, hypocrisy, dishonesty - it's still infinitely better than many other countries out there.

Except most other countries out there are perfectly content to mind their own business for the most part.

My opinion is that the U.S. is in a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" position anymore. When something goes wrong people wonder why the U.S. didn't step in to help. When we do step in to help, everyone blames us for ruining their lives. We can't win.

instead of the Tablet, I think the Statue of Liberty should hold a digital sign that reads:
"___ Days Since our Last Snafu"

We love 'em and we hate 'em... either way, we can't deny them. Of course, I'm talking about... HATERSWe can't deny that we've had our fair share of 'em. But when you get down to it... who is this board's biggest hater of them all? Is it Hectic Dialectic or Roxas who fail to see the harm in sexually offensive Avatars? What about Hancho, who made it his goal in life to bring the Girlie Thread down, one undergarment at a time? It could be Squatchcreep - the irritating Troll who really loves Wakarusa and really hates HG. What about HG, perhaps our biggest hater is the lovable Gramma, the one who REALLY hates dumb people - and The Arcadia Fries Or, maybe it's one of our own Mods... The interstateEight, who just seems to hate, well, everything. All are worthy picks, but as far as i can tell, there's really only one way to solve this. Thus I give you... 2011 Sasquatch Boarders Hater's Cup!(rules for this are the same as the traditional Sasquatch Cup. Pick the bigger hater for each group.) ((if anybody needs reminding who each hater is - ask away - i'm sure somebody can clue you in...)) Ready?...... FIGHT! Group AHorned Gramma Columbia Gorge Group BHancho Calgary J Group CSquatchCreep Space Suitor Group DHittheSwitch Mase Group EBang Bus Davers* Group Ffunk06 (see the Haters Gonna Hate Thread) 1st Timer Group GE Roxas 21 Group HHectic Dialectic Weak Shit Superfan * - i had someone else slotted here, but i forgot who it was, so Davers won the coin toss
