A+ Thermals story, and is there some Macklemore/Shabazz Palaces beef I don't know about? Or was SP opening to a crowd of impatient assholes? They weren't being impatient. Plain and simple, Shabazz Palaces sucks live. They already have a lazy flow which can be tough to grasp, but they might as well have been relaxing in LA-Z-BOY recliners having a conversation with each other.

Shabazz was probably the best show I saw this summer. I think I'm in the minority here too but I can't really stand mackelmore

I think I'm in the minority here too but I can't really stand mackelmore That's because Pitchfork doesn't like Macklemore, HAHA, THAT'S SO FUNNY, LOLOLOLOL. Honestly, I don't really like Macklemore either, but what a great show. As for Shabazz Palaces, I'm not sure I've ever backed a live show as being spectacular, when others boo and bad-mouth the band. A friend of mine saw them at Bumbershoot, and told me they suck live. I didn't believe him, just because the "lazy flow" I mentioned earlier can be tough to get. I don't mind their flow, but they did nothing live to warrant any semblance of awesome. I think you are just a super-fan. That's fine though, most think Animal Collective sucks live, and they are top five of my favorite acts live. Super-fan here.

Actually reading through the Willamette Week's coverage of the show it sounds like the bass might have been really muddled which would make a huge difference in the show. They're not the most animated performers but their raps come through clear and when the bass hits it is really powerful. If the roseland sounded anything like it did at the only other rap show i've seen there (nickatina) I completely understand how it could be disappointment also the superfan thing is probably pretty close to true.

Gunther, cbats believes the WW before you. I was going to agree with this just to spite gunther but I'm more of a mercury fan. I just saw their commentary on it and remembered that the bass in the Roseland is horrible.

I accidentally witnessed what will go down as the best Thermals ending to a show. Smashing a guitar is so cliche, but he was having issues with his guitars near the end of the show, which lead to a 10 minute delay right before their last song. When his guitar went south during, "Here's Your Future," (their greatest song in my opinion), he smashed his guitar out of anger, then finished the song while the crowd hummed the riff. Then he crowd surfed with the remains of the guitar in his hands. If you are a Thermals fan, drool. Drooling.

I ended up seeing Mad Rad and Yacht, both of which were really fun shows but the venues were shit. Both of the venues had no ventilation and it was a super hot weekend. The Branx, the venue that Yacht played at, probably got up to 105 degrees. I had to leave early because I was getting heat exhaustion. I was pretty pissed because Yacht was putting on a great show too.

I'm predicting the MusicfestNW headliners will be Silverson Pickups, Girl Talk, and Beirut (maybe that is more of an educated guess). Pretty underwhelming. I'm sure there will be a ton of awesome smaller bands, but it will be tough to justify a couple hundred for a VIP pass this year.

I'd like to see Beirut as a headliner.

I'd like to see Beirut as a headliner. Agreed, Beirut is great, but having been lucky enough to see them thrice, they are not a band I would pay to see again. I don't like the Silverson Pickups, so that is a waste. I love Girl Talk shows, but I love My Morning Jacket shows more, and word on the street is they are playing Edgefield the same night (not a part of MusicFestNW). Depending on the schedule, I'll pay the cover at the smaller venues for the bands I really like, and skip Saturday all together to see MMJ. I love MusicFestNW, but if I have no interest in attending any of the headliners, there is no reason to fork over a load of cash for a pass.

I agree with everything you said, and will probably see you at that MMJ show.

This guy will be at the MMJ show as well (if it's official).
Oh and also, in defense of cbats' post last year, I think Macklemore is boring as hell. The only good thing about Macklemore is when they have Andrew Joselyn on the violin. I know Andrew personally and he is one hell of musician.

I know Andrew personally and he is one hell of musician. Just once, I would like to hear something along the lines of, "Have you ever heard of the band [fill in the blank]? The drummer Matt is a friend of mine, not a very good drummer though. He's a terrible bass player too, poor guy has no coordination or musical ability. Actually, I wouldn't recommend seeing them live, because his faults make their shows unwatchable. He has an incurable venerial disease, and he shits his pants when he drinks too much. Totally cool guy though, we go way back."
