Man, it's still so weird to me that the Flaming Lips playing The Soft Bulletin was the official train wreck of 2011. Even if some parts of their set were some of my favorite moments of the weekend, I can understand why they get the same level of ire as Pavement and The Mars Volta for that set. I wish you guys could have seen what they can really do. Shouldn't have been that way. This is what I have heard from everyone. Still some kids who say it was the best set of the weekend, though. Those people I do not understand.

Ok, The Lips were not the life changing experience they have the ability to be, and it was disappointing. But they come no where close to how fucking god awful, utterly embarrassing, disrespectful etc. Asphalt and the Malkmus Gang were(sorry lumps).

That's exactly why the Lips show was a letdown, because it wasn't life-changing. I've seen them half a dozen times before that, and every one of those times WAS life-changing. It was the same feeling as buying drugs that turn out to be bunk. You just keep waiting for it to happen and it never does and then it's over.

But the U.F.O. show was DEFINITELY the best set of 2008.

Yeah I had only seen them once before, didn't know a single song at the time, and literally to-date is my favorite show ever I think. But your description is right on target, I kept waiting for him to stop talking and play the album, and was very disappointed when they didn't even finish. My point was that it wasn't even near as bad as Pavement.

Put simply, the difference is that the Flaming Lips didn't put on their typical show last year, whereas that IS Pavement's show all the time. The Lips did disappoint me, but it was nowhere near the disasters like Pavement, Animal Collective and Mars Volta.

It sucks when people don't get Animal Collective.
...sucks for them, I mean.

WHAT
I do not understand how Animal Collective was considered a disaster. It was so good. And they played Slippi.

And they played Slippi.I love Animal Collective, but I do have to admit that I found the sound a bit off at their Sasq show. Still never considered it a disaster by any means. Definitely not even close to the epic train wreck that was Mars Volta... the only upside was that it made the UFO show that much better in comparison.

Last year's Lips was my first time and... yeah, very disappointing with all the hype I'd heard about them. I left about 4 songs (and about 30 minutes of talking) in to go see Yeasayer (who were excellent).
I'll give the Lips a mulligan though. Hope they bring it next time through.

I hope the third times a charm for them. I saw them last year and then the year before at Marymoor and was disappointed both times. I really enjoy their music otherwise.

Don't say that, it just reinforces my horrible suspicion that their muse really has left them.

What did you think of about Modest Mouse last year? That was the first time I ever saw them. I wasn't blown away, kinda heard they are past their prime but I enjoyed them anyways.

Maybe Wayne should just spend less time trying to stay upright in a stupid plastic bubble.

I have no frame of reference for their prime, but I enjoyed MM last year too. I'm not their biggest fan, but I thought it was a good set.

Modest Mouse was one of my favorite sets last year. I thought they were just fucking incredible. It's true that they're past their prime; I saw them in 2000 when they were young and Isaac was still a fucking lunatic, and nothing will ever live up to that. But for this late in their career, for them to muster the set they played at Sasquatch,I can't complain. Dramamine, Baby Blue Sedan, Wild Packs of Family Dogs... Fuck yeah, that was a killer set.
