I really wonder how the whole collaboration/surpise thing works too? Seems pretty regular at Bonnaroo. Just on the past 2 that I attended (08' and 09) there was Kirk Hammet with MMJ, Springsteen with Phish, Lead singer of Chairlift sang 'Til Tuesday's "Voices Carry" with MGMT, Nas came out with the Beasties, Snoop and Erykah, Jimmy Buffet played a surprise set at 12 in the afternoon, Tegan and Sara joined Tiesto, Elvis Costello joined Jenny Lewis, Vedder and Jack Johnson did something apparently, Zach Galafinakis came out for MMJ's encore and there are probably others I am forgetting or didn't see. Not trying to make a Bonnaroo vs. Sasquatch pissing contest, just wonder why it's so prevelant at other fests? Bonnaroo is different, they book collaborations, so it's clear they find them important. Maybe they are providing financial incentives for these unlisted collaborations, or maybe it's just a case of "when in Rome," where everyone does it just because everyone does it. I don't recall any collabs at Lollapalooza, and very few at Coachella. ACL had a couple cool ones. Attendence might factor into this as well, the bigger the names, the bigger the collaborations.

I always thought it was strictly up to the artists to organize collaborations, like when the trumpet player from the Magnetic Nutsacks played with Broken Social Scene last year. BSS always has guests collab with them, just because that's what they do. I heard the BSS horn section played with the National, although I wasn't there, so I don't know. I think you got it backwards... the horn section from The National played with BSS... at least thats how I remember it. Last time I rely on another's recollection. Yes, I wrote in the Sasquatch review last year that it was the National's (and Edward Sharpe) brass playing with BSS.

I'd say it's time for this: If I could, I'd be wet right now.

Oh man, that would be awesome in there were Postal Services at Squatch! I could send letters to all of my friends saying things like: "Oh hey! You'll never guess what I found at Sasquatch... POSTAL SERVICES!"

I don't recall any collabs at Lollapalooza, and very few at Coachella. ACL had a couple cool ones. Attendence might factor into this as well, the bigger the names, the bigger the collaborations. I can't imagine money being THAT much a part of it. I'm not saying that a lot of the things AREN'T money-driven. Pitchfork has been known to have a lot of collaborations as well, and at least according to the musicians themselves they were thrown together just for funzeez. I went to Pitchfork in '08 and saw Bradford Cox playing a song with Spoon and then there was also the instance where Bradford, Jay Reatard, King Khan, and the drummer from the Ponys all put together an improptu band to make up for Cut Copy's lateness (apparently I missed this). According to that documentary Bradford did it was all Bradford and Brit Daniel's idea (who knows, their might be some conspiracy as to it being for money, but I doubt it) and then the impromptu band sounds like it was just a good excuse for them to hang out and play covers. I'm not saying Sasquatch is PREVENTING these things from happening, but I've found so many instances of hoping for collaborations at Sasquatch then getting let down, and it just seems such a weird that none of these ever come true when the logistics and reasoning all make sense (with the exception of Todd Barry playing with New Pornos last year). I DO have a conspiracy theory, however, that the musicians might be "sticking it to the man" though. Give as much shit as you want to Pitchfork, but they, as well as AC Entertainment are all about serving the musicians and really have a passion for music. Where as Coachella, Lolla, and Sasquatch are run by more "corporate" structures like Goldenvoice, Live Nation, and Capital Sports Entertainment (never even heard of these people, but judging by their title, I'm assuming they're more concerned with money than putting on a great music festival). My guess is that maybe the musicians are all about throwing together collaborations for more music-driven festivals like Bonnaroo and Pitchfork, but feel no desire to do much more than play what they're contractually obligated for the corporate festivals since they don't really care about promoting Live Nation or those such companies (and more importantly, homies gotta keep 'dey indie cred). I mean shit, assuming the rumors are true, that's apparently why Arcade Fire ain't playin' this year. Just a guess though. I'm totally talking out of my ass.

I'd say it's time for this: I can has? Damn BSS is going to eventually collaborate with every band I've ever liked it seems.

Death Cab for Cutie had three days between last night's show in Edmonton and their previous show in Minneapolis. I know it takes almost a day to drive from Minneapolis to Edmonton, but that's still a long time between shows for an actively touring band. Joining Death Cab last night and for all shows leading up to Sasquatch! is Jenny & Johnny. Jenny Lewis contributed vocals to "We Will Become Silhouettes" and toured with The Postal Service in 2003. While he rarely performs live, Jimmy Tamborello is preparing for live appearances in June.
I Have the Facts and I'm Voting Yes to a short Postal Service appearance at the beginning of Death Cab's encore on Saturday night.
I'm also prepared to admit I'm wrong.

I'm assuming that, because the internet did not freak out today, that did not happen.

Uhh, Storm Large performed with Pink Martini. That may not be a big deal to some people, but that certainly wasn't advertised and it made for one of the best sets of the weekend.

That was amazing but had nothing to do with 10th anniversary in my opinion. Snacks does not get credit for Storm Large.
