10/2/12Harry Nilsson - The Point!: ReduxHG- You really have a way with words. Like talent, bro. Half the reason I don't post more often about my favorite albums, etc is because I just can't find the words to express the way the music makes me feel or what it means to me. The other half being I doubt anyone cares- but that's the thing! your writings are so engaging and graphic that you make people care. Also, I understand now why you actually enjoy school. You get to write about cool shit. The titles of the last 3 papers I wrote for school were: "Increasing Caregiver Stability For Children In Out Of Home Placements", "Trajectories of Behavioral Adjustment Following Early Placement in Foster Care", and "Cognitive-Based Trauma Focused Therapy: An Effective Tool For Children with PTSD". And this is why I'd rather drive nails through my eyeballs than go to school this week.

Rad dude. For some reason I get overwhelmed with the vast amount of knowledge contained in this thread and so don't spend a lot of time in here, which is obviously a huge mistake. The way you write about music man, I dig.

No way dude, 12 Golden Country Greats is classic Ween. Sorry I'm late to this conversation but I totally agree. "Why'd you do it Fluffy, on the porch?" My hot wife used to get pissed because I would put this album on all the time after I had a few drinks. She got tired of it really fast but I think it's great.

This is incredible dude! The Amoeba is a brilliant section. I'm super envious of your writing skills. I have always wanted to be a writer in some form or fashion and your skills simultaneously make me feel incompetent as well as inspire me to get my shit together.

MutableSound.com is the record label/publishing company run by my friend Gabriel Boyer. Gabe is responsible for one of the first records I ever wrote about in this thread, the delightful and strange A Journey to Happiness Island. He is also a brilliant writer, and he associates with many other brilliant writers and musicians -- many of which have been published by Mutable Sound. It really is an honor to suddenly find myself in their company.

Rad dude. For some reason I get overwhelmed with the vast amount of knowledge contained in this thread and so don't spend a lot of time in here, which is obviously a huge mistake. The way you write about music man, I dig. I think that a lot of people regard this thread in that way. I feel like I should point out that, with a couple of exceptions, the records I decided to write about during A Record a Day's original run are actually very accessible -- I chose them because although they are much lesser known recordings, they are things that I felt people around here would really enjoy if they were exposed to them. I know I listen to a lot of weird shit, and yeah for sure there is plenty of weirdness to be found in the records discussed here but it is not the alienating kind of weirdness. At heart I truly am an unabashed lover of pop music, and by and large pop music is what you will find here. It's just a lot of stuff that never really found an audience (read: disregarded by Poochfuck). I'm not going to be all like, hey everyone read my shit and marvel at my acrobatic command of the English language. But I won't hesitate to be all like, dudes these are wonderful little records and if you listen to them I bet five bucks some of them will make you smile real big.

I was having quite a long conversation with Souly a couple of months ago about my most favorite record ever, If a Band Plays in the Woods...? by the Philistines Jr. I was telling her that the Philistines are the one band that will ever mean as much to me as the Residents do, and that if one were interested in understanding me better as a person then that person would need to do little more than give If a Band... a couple of very close listens. Understandably, Souly's initial approach to the Philistines was a little wary -- partially because I uttered their name in the same breath as the Residents (who are notoriously difficult), and partially because a lot of the stuff I really, really love would generally be regarded as unlistenable by a lot of people. I think Souly was surprised by the Philistines Jr -- standard rock instrumentation, beautiful melodies, straightforward lyrics... If a Band Plays in the Woods...? is the audio equivalent of a minute-long hug from a dear friend you haven't seen in a long time. I get that people don't expect that from records that I take the time to wax poetic about, and that's too bad because I honestly believe that if that mental block were removed a lot of you would end up discovering some of your new favorite music. I'm not in the market for taking credit for that kind of thing -- I don't need or even want people to feel compelled to come back to me and stroke my psychological dick for turning them onto something great. Really all that I want is for these things to be heard by people that I love, in the event that those people might draw even a fraction of the benefit from these records that I have over the years. These records are what keep me going. They are signposts at the crossroads of my heart. They are not records for music snobs, they are collections of songs that fill my brain with color and light and make the little hairs on the back of my arms and neck stand up. I just like to share. TL;DR -- listen to the Philistines Jr.sasquatchfest.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=bestthreadsarebest&thread=1248&page=3#15130

I posted a much earlier draft of this piece here a while back; it's kind of become a whole different beast since then. I'm more proud of this than anything I have ever written. Part two will be up in a couple days. www.mutablesound.com/home/?p=6398

That was a really interesting read HG. Like to read the 2nd half.
I particularly enjoyed this line: "...anticipating nights spent sleepless and watchful for a malicious specter intent on dick-slapping an incurable disease onto my face" .
also this, " We spent weeks hitting dead trees with pieces of other dead trees..." made me laugh for some reason.
You are a really great story teller.

Thanks, Rusty. I'm super-happy with how this one turned out.
Sadly (frustratingly), the dude who runs Mutablesound.com left for China yesterday morning, and he won't be back for at least a year. Hate to say it, but my little ghosts may meet the same fate as the series finale of ALF.
Anyone who cares to read the thrilling conclusion: PM me and I'll see about sending you a file with the whole article via email or something.
