Pumped. No playoff beard this year. Last year's beard was an embarrassing display of my inability to grow facial hair that doesn't make me look 15 and it didn't even get the job done.

Last year I won the playoff pool with me and my dude friends. Bam. On Saturday at around 8:30 it became apparent I was going to win our season hockey pool (down to the wire) for $350 and I proceeded to buy drinks for the table in dual celebration of that and the Canucks winning the presidents trophy until I realized I had spent half of my profits already.

Worst first round mach up ever. I think they'll win, but it is not going to be easy.
I think the fact the Schneider has done so well this year is the greatest thing the Canucks have going for them. If Luongo falters, they know for sure now that they have someone to go to, not the question mark of last year.

I'd say LA is the weakest team to make the playoffs in the west (or if not, very close to. This is a walk in the park compared to last years first round draw.

Y'know, at first I thought that Rusty was out to lunch too, but when you really think about it LA stands a decent chance. Straight away Van will need to tailor their game to approach the 3 defensive minded lines LA runs (which the Canucks have the talent to do). LA also has a handful of those intangible "heart" players that really thrive in pressure/crash and bang situations (Brown, Richards, Carter, Doughty, Williams, Stoll, Fraser). I don't see LA standing a chance to go far in this year's playoff, but I'm guessing that they know this as well which can be dangerous for the other team. I'm guessing (like, completely guessing) that LA will have an easier time going all out balls-to-the-walls as they probably would consider a 1st round win to be as great of an accomplishment as getting to the final at this stage of the game. Plus Quick has shown this season that he can steal a game better than both Lou and Schneider.

So we grabbed the tickets after getting a 5% off email when I didn't complete the order the first time I visited the site. Section 107 row 17 I think. We'll have to exchange a high five or 9 at the game! Holy shit, this is happening. Row 17 right there with ya! Probably won't be wearing the wolfhat to this one, but you better believe I'll be sporting a jersey! Let me know when you get your seat numbers. We're 10-12. Nice work with the 5% off, too.

In response to all the 1st round match-up talk: yeah, LA wasn't my first choice either. Their team is one of the few that has goal tending that gives our a run for its money in the entire league. That is going to be the difference. And as Rusty already said, this year we will (hopefully) be much quicker to put in Schneids when Lou falters. And as FD said, LA does have players with heart, but in my opinion we have dominant skaters and a much deeper team. It's going to be a goalie dual. Canucks in 6.

I'm just saying that I would rather play LA than Det, Nashville, St. Louis, CHI. The only two teams you can compare to LA are really SJ and Phoenix, but if I had to pick I'd pick LA. They aren't even a good defensive team really, just a good goalie. And everyone knows they can't score. Like I said, no matchup would be easy, just saying this is basically the best we could hope for. Dallas would have been a worse matchup for us.

This compared to last season when we had to play the preseason favorites and perennial Canuck-killers Chicago in the first round last year. It's not close.

I think it's pretty much generally accepted that LA is the best team with the worst record in the west. I would rather play SJ, Phx and Chicago is not even near what they were a few years ago. LA is the team nobody wanted, not because they are unbeatable, but because they have so much potential that could explode at any moment. EDIt: I mean explode in a good way.

I was pretty pleased with how the standings worked out. SJ may have been a bit of a better matchup for us, but I'll take LA over the rest. Mike Smith (the goalie for Phoenix) has been on a tear recently allowing 2 goals in the last 5 games including a shutout with 55 saves. Quick might have a better GAA but their SA% is the same. I would rather play Quick now than Mike Smith when he is hot. Chicago just always seems to have our number and Detroit is a team built for the playoffs.

That's our plan for Monday, too. Minus the flying home part, and plus being next to a pool.
