I like your ideas, rimjobflashmob! I saw Roseblood (who I think have morphed into Slang now with some lineup changes) a few years ago at Project Pabst, and they ruled. I'm having a hard time figuring out how big potential headliners will be. If we think Modest Mouse will be there, will they be the biggest name on the lineup? I think they would be billed above De La Soul or Violent Femmes on most festival lineups. Could St. Vincent play? I'm surprised she didn't play the PNW last year behind Daddy's Home, and she doesn't have any local dates announced yet. She's playing Japan 8/20 and Boston 9/10 (opening for Red Hot Chili Peppers?!) with nothing between. She played Sasquatch 4 times.

Elvis Costello and First Aid Kit are looking very thingable Elvis Costello could be possible. He has shows in Denver 8/23, Salt Lake City 8/25, and Thousand Oaks 8/28. If you're right about the dates, he could play Thing 8/26 or 8/27, but then he'd have back-to-back shows with significant travel between them. I don't think First Aid Kit's current tour dates suggest a Thing appearance (although they don't rule them out). Their tour currently ends in Maryland 8/21 with no shows west of Chicago. Both artists played Sasquatch, so they make sense. It's good to be back in speculation mode!!

We got pooped to 2021, dudes and dudettes. Stay healthy out there. Tremendously bummed, but at least they intend to bring it back in the future. This is one of the farthest-out events to be cancelled, so it doesn't seem like a public health issue. I mean, the situation could get worse, but it seems unlikely that it would be unsafe for a 5,000 person event to happen in rural Washington, but safe for a 72,000 person football game to happen in Seattle around the same time. So I assume a lot of artists dropped out because they had to reschedule other, higher-profile dates. But Thing still has plenty of time to replace those artists. Maybe with the expansion to three days, they didn't think they could curate a good enough lineup with the pool of available artists? That seems unlikely. Why not just go back down to two days if three days is too difficult to book now? Did they fear ticket sales would be low if people feared the situation could get worse or the event could get cancelled, so they'd want to wait to buy tickets until closer to festival? What do y'all think? I would love to know which artists they still had booked when they made the decision to cancel this year's festival so that I can go see them when they come through town in the spirit of attending Thing!

Time to get back to some rampant speculation!
Ben Gibbard makes a lot of sense for this Thing. He already has solo shows scheduled for this spring (some of which I assume will be rescheduled) and summer, and his solo profile has been raised a lot recently with these Live from Home streams. Death Cab played Sasquatch four times and the Postal Service twice. I think Jeff Tweedy playing Wilco songs alone was well-received last year, and I think Ben playing Death Cab songs alone would be too!
And speaking of artists who last played Sasquatch in 2013, I think Cake would be a good fit as a headliner.

Fitz and the Tantrums announced a show in southern Oregon 8/24. It’s their only show announced around that time, and it seems weird to me to do a one off show not in their hometown on a Monday night. I bet they add dates up the coast that week and play Thing.

Man Man skips the Northwest on their tour. It wraps up 3 months before Thing, but they’d make sense. Sub Pop is releasing the new album.

While researching that post, I was reminded how great the July 2014 Sasquatch lineup was. Shame on all of us.

Nathaniel Rateliff, Kevin Morby, and Damien Jurado playing Red Rocks 8/25-26. I know that a festival that runs for 19 years is bound to book most prominent relevant acts, but I still think it's noteworthy that 10 of the top 12 billed musical acts of the inaugural Thing (counting Iron & Wine and Calexico separately) played Sasquatch at least once. Nathaniel Rateliff (plus the Night Sweats, amongst the most terribly-named bands) played Sasquatch once in 2016, and Damien Jurado played Sasquatch three times (2006, 2012, and 2014).

Matt Berninger would be fantastic and his solo album is coming out this year. I don't know that Berninger has given any intention he intends to tour solo, but it would be cool! And it would be a trend of giving a solo artist who fronts a former Sasquatch-headlining band a slot at Thing. Of course, Jeff Tweedy's solo career is much different than Matt Berninger's, so it's not an exact comparison, but I would like it! Speaking of front-people of bands who played Sasquatch, Brittany Howard isn't playing the west coast (except for LA) on her long headlining tour this summer. And Stephen Malkmus is playing pacific northwest shows, but I could still see that happening. Chris Funk(who is playing in Malkmus' band this summer)'s dates with The Decemerists conveniently end before Thing!

But I do agree that The National (or any former Sasquatch headliner not named Macklemore) would be a long shot. I have absolutely no idea how popular Macklemore is now. I just really miss rampantly speculating. I’m obviously with you!

The National just announced a tour that ends the first of August. They are playing Montana and Idaho, but not Washington or Oregon. They might be a little too big for this Thing, but they are a Snacks fave and I could see him trying to get them as a headliner. I think they’re too big and skipping Washington and Oregon because they played Marymoor and Edgefield last summer. But, considering I recognized people I saw at their Edgefield show one week after Thing last year from Thing, they would definitely be popular! But I think past Sasquatch headliners are probably too big.

The email announcement mentioned that Andrew Bird was at the festival last year... somehow I did not know that. Andrew was part of John C Reilly's crew last year. In his band? I remember sitting stage left at Parquet Courts, intending to then check out John C Reilly for a bit, before turning around to see a line of people who surely couldn’t all fit into the Pavilion. So I went to the Luminarium.

Some more rampant speculation:
I remember an Adam Zacks interview from several years ago where he said Radiohead is the band he'd most like to book for Sasquatch. Ed O'Brien is playing festivals this summer, including some in the US. I wonder if Zacks could try to scratch that itch by bringing EOB to Thing!
The email announcement mentioned that Andrew Bird was at the festival last year... somehow I did not know that. He's touring with Thing vets Calexico and Iron & Wine this summer, but not playing the northwest. He only played Sasquatch once, but, as long as he had a good time attending the festival as a spectator, I could see him showing up to perform at Thing this year.

Rampant speculation time:
Last year's festival featured a lot of Sasquatch veterans. Both headliners played midday main stage sets a few years earlier. If they follow a similar trend, I could see The War On Drugs, Courtney Barnett, and Digable Planets as plausible options.
Big Thief, Phoebe Bridgers, and Sharon Van Etten will also be active this summer and could fit the bill!
I thought Run the Jewels and Bright Eyes could have been options, but they'll both be in Europe that weekend.

thingnw.org is currently down. An announcement seems imminent. Time to turn the engine back on!
Back in the Sasquatch days, we "tried" to keep these threads pure, but this time around, just put all THING chat here. I'll update the OP as we get info.
See you back in Port Townshend August 28-30!
