Last year I had a little trouble getting my D80 in on the last day but managed to convince the guy it wasn't a pro camera. I would suggest putting a small lens (I'll have my 50mm) on it when entering and keeping your other lenses spread out in other bags, etc. But it sounds like they're cracking down on a lot of different things this year (4 people/car, etc.) that I wouldn't be surprised if they are sticky about cameras.

I think we did the 84/97 drive in about 4-4.5 hours last year. Yes, it really is that long. I think taking 12 would add quite a bit more time to that as you'll have to pass through some small towns/windy mountain roads. Google maps says that route takes a little over 5 hours vs. 4.5 along 84.
