I think if the management knew they would tank down the stretch they would have sent RNH down. At the time the decision was made Edmonton looked like they had a legitimate shot at the playoffs. Also, despite injury he looked good for alot more than 10 games.
That being said, I tend to be like you in that I'm more prone to push for a team to tank/rebuild and become a contender than hover in mediocrity like the Canucks did for years. They way that the Canucks became back-to-back presidents trophy winners I have always thought they were very fortunate with. Kesler and the Sedins magically jumped up 1 or 2 levels after seeming to plateau. It doesn't usually happen like that.
Still, most Canadian markets are filled with fans that disagree with that mentallity and don't put up with tanking when you have any shot at the playoffs. It totally makes sense what you are saying, but the Oilers would just be even worse without these kids... like probably one of the worst teams ever. Pragmatically, I agree, who cares. If you are going to come 11th anyway you might as well tank to the max.
On the other hand, Oilers fans know full well from recent experience that all you need to finish is 8th to have a shot at the cup.

I agree with Alex here. After playing RNH for 10 games it was apparent that he was one of, if not THE top player on the team. Doesn't matter what age they player or what organization, if you are that important to your teams sucess, you're playing.
Another #1 pick and Edmonton is destined to be a very good team in 2-3 years. They will push for a playoff spot next year and might get there. Eberle-RNH-Hall was the best line in hockey at times last season and they will only get better. They have an up and coming goaltender, although they do have big holes on D.
Chicago just went through the same thing, and it won them a cup.

I will say that an LA-Philly final would make for some good storylines with all the players than have changed hands over the last year. Besides that, can't think of one interesting finals matchup.

Pitts Philly was one of the craziest spectacles ever, but other than that it has been a snooze. Despite the awesome highlights those games produced, they were pretty bad games. If I was actually a fan of either of those teams I would have been ripping my hair out during that series. It was just a straight up shooting gallery. The defence played by both of those teams was aweful as they refused to adapt to the others style and just tried to score as many goals as possible to make up for it. As a casual observer it was sorta fun to watch, but if the Canucks played a series like that I would hate it. I certainly agree with you there. A spectacle, yes, but not a clinic in playoff hockey by any means. Also sportsman ship may have been at an all time low. I don't want to give the impression that what I prefer is all playoff games to run 12+ goals per game.

I like seeing the 'sure bet' teams lose and get a taste of humble pie. Good for the lower ranked teams. Yeah same for me. Like how many times have you seen Detroit go far, it gets boring after a while. What's boring is the thought of a Nashville-Phoenix series. Upsets are great, but in hockey it often means neutral zone trap low scoring boring games. It's not the idea of an upset, it's how upsets happen in hockey specifically the last few years. New Jeresey circa late 90s mastered defensive-mind hockey and became a dynasty. Minnesota became a pesky opponent. They changed the rules of hockey because no one was watching anymore. This 'good for smaller teams' talk is a red herring. If you think this is good for hockey as a business you are way off. Phoenix has been consistantly a stronger team than the leafs for a few years now... it doesn't matter. Big markets will remain big markets.

Also, while I too dislike Philly, a Flyers-Rangers conference final is perhaps the only potential remotely interesting series that is still possible...

This has got to be the worst playoffs ever... worse than the year Montreal knocked out the two best teams in the league. Upsets by teams who can't score are not exciting.
Pitts Philly was one of the craziest spectacles ever, but other than that it has been a snooze.
The teams left in the West make me throw up in my mouth. I can't remember a year when I literally had no interest after the first round was done.

Who said L.A was a weak team again? Weak est. I stand corrected though, they are now second weakest to Vancouver. I don't mean to totally downplay LA, but there is noone the Canucks could beat at the level they are playing at. Easily the worst series I've watched in terms of cup-winning potential so far. Losing Daniel obviously hurt, but I didn't think it would make them play like a non-playoff team, which they did in the first two games. If you still think LA are better than anyone else in the west playoffs other than maaaaybe SJ you havent been watching.

Kind of suprised there aren't more people upset about James Murphy/Bon Iver. Probably the worst conflict for me.

I LIVE IN PITTSBURGH RIGHT NOW AND EVERYONE IS SAD. ACTUALLY half of everyone is sad. lotta philly fucks out here. They'll take the series. Patience Pittsburgh, patience. I concur. Also every single home team has lost home Ice advantage already... can't remember that ever happening. So much parity in the league right now.

Sigur Ros. Seattle. Paramount Theater. August 8th. Holy fuck. I'm more excited about this than Coachella and Sasquatch combined! That is amazing. Before I get too excited though, can you post a link to this? Can't seem to see it anywhere.

This compared to last season when we had to play the preseason favorites and perennial Canuck-killers Chicago in the first round last year. It's not close.

In response to all the 1st round match-up talk: yeah, LA wasn't my first choice either. Their team is one of the few that has goal tending that gives our a run for its money in the entire league. That is going to be the difference. And as Rusty already said, this year we will (hopefully) be much quicker to put in Schneids when Lou falters. And as FD said, LA does have players with heart, but in my opinion we have dominant skaters and a much deeper team. It's going to be a goalie dual. Canucks in 6. I'm just saying that I would rather play LA than Det, Nashville, St. Louis, CHI. The only two teams you can compare to LA are really SJ and Phoenix, but if I had to pick I'd pick LA. They aren't even a good defensive team really, just a good goalie. And everyone knows they can't score. Like I said, no matchup would be easy, just saying this is basically the best we could hope for. Dallas would have been a worse matchup for us.

Lump, the original version is by some guy named Rich Boy. Pretty much every rapper made their own version of the song though. Kanye did one about boobs. I Had no idea there was more than one. I was talking about the Rich Boy song. Only reason I know it is through Girl Talk.

Worst first round mach up ever. I think they'll win, but it is not going to be easy. I think the fact the Schneider has done so well this year is the greatest thing the Canucks have going for them. If Luongo falters, they know for sure now that they have someone to go to, not the question mark of last year. I agree that no first round matchup is easy. Still, who were you really hoping to draw? I'd say LA is the weakest team to make the playoffs in the west (or if not, very close to. This is a walk in the park compared to last years first round draw.

Pumped. No playoff beard this year. Last year's beard was an embarrassing display of my inability to grow facial hair that doesn't make me look 15 and it didn't even get the job done.
