I have my first bottle of Pliny the Elder in my fridge. Just found out the tiny ass liquor store near my campus carries it when they get a case shipped to them. I'll drink it this week. Very excited.

In Portland you can get Pliny any time you want, but it's a secret. The Fred Meyer on SE 39th and Hawthorne always has them, but only in the back so you have to ask the wine/beer steward to grab it for you when they're there. You can get 2 at a time if you like. It's nice.

What is this beer and what makes it so special?

I think the real question here is "your Fred Meyer has a wine/beer steward?!"

Not sure I'm too impressed with this one. Probably my least favorite holiday beer so far. The Yellow Snow is a little better.

Not a big fan of Rogue, personally. Currently drinking that Phillips Krypton Rye PA that davers talked about on the last page, and moving on to Granville Islands Brewing's Burly Goat Weisenbock. The latter should be interesting.

Not a big fan of Rogue, personally. I always enjoy Dead Guy, but most of the other bottled beers I've tried are alright, but nothing special. They come with a little bit higher of a price tag too. I also saw a Rogue Pumpkin Patch I wanted to try, but at $11 I decided to pass. I have one of these I'm saving for tomorrow.

Rocco's in Belltown had an Odin/Oola tap takeover last night. Had one of their aged stout, triple IPA, and Amber - all excellent.

I've yet to try the He'brew, but I've been meaning to. Word on the prohibitive cost of Rogue beers, and you're right, Dead Guy is the exception.

I echo y'all about Rogue. Since my girlfriend works for a brewery tour company, I've tried a lot of the beer in Portland and Rogue is always underwhelming (Dead Guy excluded, I also think it's good). I've got a few pictures of good beers I drank but I've been too lazy to send them from my phone to my computer so I could post them. Sometime soon.

I don't really LOVE Rogue or anything but I do like some of their beers. I generally only have them when I visit one of their locations though. Rogue in Newport is worth going to. Especially if it is your birthday. Join their Rogue Nation deal (free) and you get a free pint and shirt on your bday. There are 3 different Rogue locations in Newport alone so...3 pints and 3 shirts for free. Even if you aren't a huge fan you can't go wrong there. Haha.

Celebrating! Can't wait for Portugal. The Man to come back. I am guessing they will be on the Main Stage this year, too

There is a brewery in Jackson Hole, WY called Melvin Brewing. It is attached to a Thai restaurant and is a 3 barrel system. I guess the guy that owns it is originally from the Whatcom/Skagit County area in Washington. He has won the best IPA award for the last two years at GABF in Colorado (so I am told). He started bringing this award winning double IPA (Melvin 2x4 Double IPA) with him when he comes home. He is distributing it all over Bellingham and I have seen it in 3 bars in the past two weeks. Supposedly it is highly sought after and one of the only places he is distributing it is right in my own backyard! Super tasty beer. If anyone is able to get in this neck of the woods I would highly recommend it. Especially for the hop heads.

I totally forgot about posting the reviews to the rest of my beer case...
Day 16: Slipstream Cream Ale, 5%
Not much smell. A bit of grains. Tastes faintly of barley and yeast. Pretty weak tasting overall. Not offensive, but not much to enjoy either
6/10
Day 17: Rural Brewers Brown Brew, 5%
Nice toasty grains smell. Hints of roasted marshmallows? Rich yet mild flavours. Easy drinking, short finish. Good brown ale.
8/10
Day 18: Twisted Oak Stillage Barrel Reserve Rye Barrel Aged Bock, 6.8%
Molasses, oakey, vanilla. Herbal spices. Mead. Honey. Very thick.
8/10
Day 19; Skookum Cascadian Brown Ale, 6.5%
Full of flavour. Very malty, big hops punch. Brown sugar. Really good. A bit on the heavy side for drinking a lot of, but I could enjoy a 6 pack of this quite easily.
8.5/10
Day 20: Blue Buck, 5%
Light malt flavours. A bit nutty and chocolatey. Easy drinking and simple, but not much to get excited about. I drink this stuff a lot and now that I'm paying attention I realize it isn't anything interesting. Just crisp and refreshing. Honestly if I was drinking a lot I'd probably take the elisinor.
7/10
Day 21: Twisted Oak Stillage Barrel Reserve Scotch Ale 6.8%
Sweet maple syrup. Very thick. A touch salty. Brown sugar, honey roasted peanuts. Malty dry finish.
8/10
Day 22: Hammer Barrel Aged Imperial Stout 8.3%
At first I thought they screwed up and put another of the day 6, but this one is the same as day 6 with the exception that it is barrel aged. Let's see if it makes any difference.
Very little smell again. Chocolate, dark roasted malt. Thick and syrupy. Coffee. Somewhat stronger amount of oak, but it's tough to tell 2 weeks apart. It seems a bit smoother than day 6, but overall pretty damn close.
7.5/10
Day 23: Cabin Fever Imperial Black IPA, 8.5%
A lot like yesterdays, but with hops. Makes sense I guess. Dark roasted malt, chocolate, coffee. Citrus and fruity hops. Interesting balance, I think I like it. Starts like a stout and finishes like an IPA.
9/10
Day 24: Twisted Oak Stillage Barrel Reserve Rum Barrel Aged Red Ale, 6.8%
First time I've ever had a rum aged beer. Should be interesting. Very sweet and a bit oaky. Tastes familiar, but I can't put my finger on it. Cherry, light malt, vanilla. Almost like a winter ale actually. Light milk chocolate, cinnamon. Silky smooth.
Well, I think they may have saved the best for last. Too sweet to drink a bunch of, but its damn near perfect to drink on a winter night. Lightly coats your mouth like melted milk chocolate and leaves vanilla lingering.
9.5/10
Started drinking rum and eggnog after, could hardly tell the difference.

Damn dude, that was quite a trip. Great purchase. Next year I might have to camp out somewhere up there to get my hands on one. Phillips needs to start exporting to USA. Thought that was in the works? Mmmm...love me some porter. Not my favorite beer that Schooner Exact makes but still a good porter. On massive sale at Haggen, too:) This Mogwai album sure is a creeper. Been liking it more and more with each listen. Really hitting the spot right now. Maybe porters enhance Rave Tapes?

Even though the price per beer was high (by Canada prices even!) it was still totally worth it. I've never paid that much attention to what I was drinking and I feel like I learned a lot.
If they don't make their way down south next year I'll do my best to get a case to you somehow. You're basically the main reason this thread is still a thing.
PS I hate that you Americans post all of these beers in here that I can't get. I'll have to look into getting a bunch of cheap craft beer when I am killing a few days between weekends at Coachella.
That last sentence may also be the best thing I have ever said on this board.

That would be cool. I would probably still try to come up just to have an excuse to haha. We will get beers if I end up going up there.
