I was telling everyone there was no way they'd play 'Kids' about two seconds before they ripped right into it. Ha, you did this too huh?

I think the fans of The Decemberists first couple albums will be considerably pleased with it. Hey, that's me! Fuck everything from Picaresque on.

Not to be 'that guy', but honestly I feel like everything after '5 Songs' is a step in the wrong direction. 'I Don't Mind', 'Shiny' and 'Oceanside' are probably my three favorite Decemberists songs (excluding 'Grace Cathedral Hill') but the Fancy Pirate thing has been getting old ever since the second time I heard 'A Cautionary Song'.
If they can get back to that I'd be the happiest Decemberists fan in the world.

I'm pretty much a gushing Decemberists fan through and through, sans most of The Hazards of Love. The Crane Wife might be one of my all-time favorite albums. But anyway, yes the new album is a big step back to the basics and I think it sounds great. Nothing piratey about it haha

No it's definitely not piratey, but after one listen, it's a little boring for me right now. But I'll give it its due process.

So this year is looking pretty damn amazing. The thought of having a record from Burial, Madvillain, Radiohead, Portishead and The Avalanches seems too good to be true. It probably is, but the thought is mind blowing.

I hate to even tell this story, but I used to have a copy of '5 Songs' that only had the five songs on it. It came in a hand-screened sleeve; I bought it from their website right before Hush reissued that disc. I lost it somewhere along the way, and I hate that.
Still in my collection, though, is one of the first pressings of 'Her Majesty...' on vinyl from Jealous Butcher Records. Original (different) artwork hand-screened by Carson Ellis, full size pull-out poster, lyric sheet and an original short story by Meloy. Hand-numbered edition of 500 copies, with only the first 200 copies being pressed on snow-white vinyl. I have #174.
I'd post pictures but I don't want Peatrick jizzing on his keyboard, and also I am enjoying my morning coffee.

Actually I've got a buddy with that same Her Majesty. He's a huge Decemberists fan. Colin Meloy's from Helena, where I live. My advisor in college was his aunt. And he plays little solo shows here every now and then. But he's not even the most talented in his family - his sister's written two of my favorite novels of the last ten years
