Went to a Terry Gilliam triple-bill yesterday. They played The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, Time Bandits and Brazil.
Has anyone here ever seen Brazil? It was visually amazing but by the end of it, I felt like my brain had melted.

Brazil is one of my favorite movies of all time. It's damn near perfect, and is miles and miles better than any other Gilliam film. I have a really cool Criterion DVD set of that film that has the full director's cut as well as the 90 minute studio cut, which they call the 'Love Conquers All' version. It ends as Sam and Jill make their escape in Jill's truck and eliminates all of the horrific things that follow, including the fate of both Sam and Harry Tuttle. It's nearly unwatchable except as a study of the power of editing, but as that it is amazing.
I never cared much for Baron Munchausen, though. I always felt like Gilliam lost his battle with the studio on that one. It has some neat visuals, but it is pretty dumb. Robin Williams pretty much kills it for me. It's always mentioned alongside his best work, though. Tideland, now, there is a great film. It's pretty bleak, but next to Brazil is undeniably his best.

If the movie just ended with them escaping, I would've felt ripped off in a way. Even though my brain was complete goo and I wasn't really sure what was going on, I at least really liked that my mind-frame seemed to match Sam at the end. I'll definitely be watching it again at some point, I think as the third film for the day it was a little trying and deserves my viewing best. And I just loved the aesthetic of the movie. My favourite film is Fritz Lang's Metropolis and I could see so much in Brazil from it, plus so many other movies. It's a film buff's movie for sure. I'd never seen Baron Munchausen before either (I'd only seen Time Bandits) and I'm glad I did but I agree that it was definitely the weakest of the three. It was fun and imaginative (as I expect from Gilliam most of the time) but grew tiresome for me, and the Williams' stuff did drag on. I'll have to check out Tideland sometime.

Tideland is brutal. So brutal that it never saw a theatrical release.
Stunning, strange, beautiful film.

Is anyone else also actually dead this New Years day? That is one creepy ass post in The Movies thread. My brain is still destroyed from last night and it legitimately horrified me the first couple times I read it.

At least that sounds like a semi-fun place to be on New Years depending on how that business club is. My poor friend Austin had to work in a movie theatre till 2am.

The Girl with the Sexually Exploited and Misogynistic Females Are Only Super Cool and Tough When They Exert Male Violence Traits But Also Look Sexy Doing It Tattoo is not my cup of tea. Also I hate when rape is used as a cheap plot device, makes my skin crawl. Sorry y'all. You might not realize it from the Hollywood marketing, but the movie (and moreso the book, whose original title in Swedish was "Men Who Hate Women"), is about the exploitation of women by men and women taking power over the men who dominate their lives. Lisbeth (Dragon tattoo lady) isn't really supposed to be sexy at all, and really in the American movie she isn't sexy too often...in the Swedish one she is almost never sexy. And the rape is very much an integral part of the theme. So while it might not LOOK like it's your cup of tea on the surface, FD, you actually might find some common ground with it. #jussayin Anyway, I saw that, War Horse, and Mission Impossible 3 over Christmas break. War Horse was hyper-sentimental but beautiful with a couple of great scenes, and MI:3 was a serviceable way to spend two and a half hours with my family.
